We recently connected with Jamaal Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Jamaal , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Taking the entrepreneurial route was a monumental risk that I embarked on in 2009 when I started my first brand COSTY. We officially launched in 2010, and it marked the beginning of an exhilarating journey. The foundation of this venture was a complete vision of an apparel product and a brand that I believed in passionately. From the outset, I was committed to delivering quality products in the fiercely competitive fashion and apparel industry. I understood the importance of creating unique ornaments and compelling reasons for customers to keep coming back. My pride in my vision and creativity fueled my determination to ensure proper delivery.
Throughout this entrepreneurial odyssey, I discovered my knack for building meaningful relationships. My curiosity, creativity, and gift of communication allowed me to navigate various industries beyond my core expertise in production development. In 2020, I took another daring step by launching my brand, Dezineyurself, and introducing my signature collection, “Energy Is The Currency,” which not only represented my journey but also emphasized the significance of intentionality in our lives. This endeavor led to a fruitful partnership with a production development company named WithSight/PRCV and a thrilling role as a creative director for merch/apparel and brand partnerships with a gaming experience and technology startup, Gamer X Society.
This risky path was filled with a multitude of emotions, and it wasn’t without its challenges. However, it was absolutely essential for me to forge my unique way forward. I remained resolute in my mission to inspire people worldwide, all the while dedicating myself to bringing valuable resources to my community and similar ones in South Central Los Angeles. While I’m acutely aware that I’m still far from achieving my ultimate goals, my commitment remains unshakable. I am determined to continue pushing boundaries and striving for success on my own terms, propelled by unwavering faith and a willingness to risk it all for what I truly believe in.
Jamaal , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had a deep passion for fashion, stemming from my fascination with owning the hottest Nike and Jordan sneakers. Observing the immense consumer hype surrounding these exclusive products, I began to notice a shift towards clothing and merchandise. It struck me that there was an opportunity to create a product with a similar impact. Connecting with those around me, I saw no reason why we couldn’t embark on this journey. As the sales grew, and celebrities started wearing our products, I became fully committed to this path. What resonated most with me was the ability to shape our own narrative and bring our unique vision to life. This distinctiveness set us apart, but my ultimate goal was always to inspire others.
Beyond personal success, my true passion lies in creating a movement and fostering a community of creators. I aspire to provide them with the necessary resources and tools to thrive. This mission is deeply influenced by the legacy of Nipsey Hussle, also known as Ermias Asghedom. My journey began with merchandise, but it has evolved to empower brands, music artists, athletes, and creators with their merchandise. Additionally, I am part of a company at the forefront of bringing next-generation technology to the world, expanding access to opportunities for my community. I firmly believe that this is all part of a God’s plan, and I’m dedicated to making a meaningful impact.
In sum, my journey in the fashion and merchandise industry started with a fascination for sneakers and grew into a mission to inspire and empower creators while providing access to opportunities for underserved communities. It’s a path marked by passion, creativity, and a commitment to doing what’s right, and I’m excited to continue this journey with unwavering dedication.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to design oneself and inspire others. It’s about standing as a beacon of inspiration, and without that, everything else feels empty. It’s essential to be mindful of our intentions and seek collaborations with others, understanding that together, we can achieve greatness and leave a lasting impact on the world.
