We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamaal Lewis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamaal below.
Hi Jamaal , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I started my career and Arizona, and it was something I never planned on. I started booking local jobs out there and found a real love for the entertainment industry. before I knew it I was traveling back-and-forth between LA and Arizona for gigs. after only a couple of months, I decided to take a risk and pack up and move to Los Angeles.
Jamaal , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jamaal Lewis, and I’m a model and Actor and Hollywood California. I started in this industry 14 years ago and it has truly been a roller coaster. The best thing about this industry is the inconsistency of the gigs that you book. One day can be a national commercial for T-Mobile and the next day you can be a lead in a music video. for me it’s super exciting and also instilled an internal drive or motivation because if you’re not booking you’re not making money.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My whole life I have played sports and been an athlete whether it was track and field baseball football basketball or soccer. I was fortunate to get a full ride scholarship to Arizona State University and further my career, and had a short state in the NFL. The big pivot for me was playing a full contact, sport and then going to the modeling industry was a complete U-turn
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I don’t really feel like I had to unlearn any lessons, because without the lessons, there comes no wisdom or knowledge on how to handle certain situations. I did learn how to get used to hearing no, and seeing people shut doors in my face with the auditioning process, which is very humbling.
