Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jam Murphy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jam, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you signed with an agent or manager? Why or why not?
I’ve been with my print agent for 12 years and he has since introduced me to my Film/ TV & commercial agent. When I found him I was living in Los Angeles and got scouted by a reality show casting director who was looking for personal trainers. That gig wasn’t a fit but she gave me the name, Topher DesPres, to look up if I was interested in fitness modeling. As soon as I got in my car, I googled him and learned that he was in New York. After three attempts at contacting him he responded and I moved to New York to sign with Wilhelmina models 3 months later!
Jam, we love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, can you take a moment to tell us how you got started acting?
When I was in high school my friends brother, who was a film student (Bruce Guido), asked me to be in a movie he wrote. It sparked something for me and since then always had it in the back of my mind that was what I wanted to do. Long story short, I finally stopped waiting for “it” to happen to me & enrolled in a Drama school in 2019.
This was after 8 years of modeling, which I’ve enjoyed every minute of & has been such a blessing, it put me through school, but realized I wasn’t using my voice & had a burning desire to use it.
What are you most proud of & what do you think has been an instrumental part of your success?
I credit my background in athletics for my ability to focus & stay disciplined with my practice…and my parents, who are both free spirited big kids for my tendency to dream big & stay curious.
What makes me most proud is being able to say that I love what I do. It’s definitely not always glamorous or easy but I can’t imagine anything else.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Instagram became a thing right when I moved to New York so it’s been a fun way to stay connected with people and share my journey but it’s always only been glimpses. I’m actually a very private person so it’s a highlight reel designed to keep ya wanting more!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Freedom is what drives me; being free to explore where my heart pulls me, free to express myself artistically & free to walk my dog whenever he wants 90% of the time ha!
