We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jalynne Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jalynne, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am very happy as a creative. I’ve worked my fair share of regular jobs and I always quit them. I’d always be excited starting a new adventure with whatever company I decided to work at. But, I’d always hit a wall when I’ve been there for so long. I’d get very depressed and unmotivated. I just realized that I’m not doing what I love to do which is, writing and voice work. Since I was a kid I’ve always known working a “regular job” wasn’t it for me. I’ve always known I was going to create.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Ja’Lynne but I go by Jai. I am a Queer fictional short story writer. What sets me apart? I’d have to say my ability to write stories that validates one’s inner child or just being able to bring raw emotion(s) into what I’m writing. I’m not one to put myself in a box so I don’t really care to have a niche, it’s really whatever comes to me at that moment.
Something that I’m proud of? As I’ve stated before I’m just proud of just starting. I put so much of myself into what I do and all of that passion can become stagnant or stationary because I’m overthinking my work. Having an amazing support system that really sees that light in you and really wants you to win is everything, I adore them.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The love. The love and support means everything to me.. I just love the love that’s given to me. I adore hearing people say that my stories made them want to do more inner child work or even begin. Sometimes I’ll get really long messages about my stories and how it made them reflect and lessons they took from them. I love hearing people say their kids love my stories. Lastly, at times I’ll get requests to write a story for them or their kid(s), record it and send it to them because they enjoy my writing and how calming I sound. It makes the long nights and the frustrating writers block worth it, I love it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Inconsistency will not bring you the results you’re looking for. Believe me, I know, haha. I’d like to say 2021-2022 I wasn’t in the best mental space to make room for my creativity. Also, ontop of being anxious about posting my work as well. I was scared but also I pushed myself enough to still pursue it scared and it’s been pretty great since.
