We recently connected with Jalesse Heath and have shared our conversation below.
Jalesse, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I discovered I wanted to be a beauty and fashion influencer while modeling years back. I was introduced to the beauty and fashion world at the age of 18. While pursuing modeling I ran into makeup artists, photographers and creators which opened my eyes into the beauty and fashion world. That’s what ignited my passion for the beauty industry
Jalesse, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jalesse. I go by MakeupbyJalesse on social platforms. I am a makeup artist as well as a beauty and fashion influencer. I’ve been doing makeup professionally for 7 years which opened doors for me within the influencer industry. Professionally I’ve worked on awards shows, YouTube web serious, photo shoots and much more. I’ve collaborated with brands such as Dermablend, Kat Von D, Fenty Beauty and many more. My journey through this industry if I had to describe it would be “Tenacity “ I’ve been at this for a while and it has its ups and downs. It’s not always easy putting yourself out there being that you don’t know how your talent or craft is going to be received, it can also even be hard to rally up followers or supporters but Id like to believe that whatever is for you will be for you. Doors will close in your face, opportunities will slip through your fingers but in the end it’s how you get back up with grace and continue to believe in yourself and strive for greatness that’s within you. I believe what sets me apart from others is the ability to be eclectic. I’m a woman of many talents and I like to include it all in my content that way I can reach many people of all backgrounds. When it comes to my content viewers will walk away learning new things and having fun watching my videos. Whether it’s makeup, hair or fashion I will put 100% into what I do because in the end I’m truly living out my passion in this life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I would say I had to unlearn was the pressure of being perfect. At times I’m a perfectionist and I’m always so hard on myself. Often times to the point where I could destroy my own opportunities. With social media everyone displays everything that’s good in their lives and never what’s bad. We’ve created a perfect image. So I had to tell myself no one is perfect. No matter what the world looks like no one has it all together. When I embed that in my head and I learned I’m allowed to make mistakes, mistakes only leads to better choices and decisions. So learning to not be perfect and if I mess up creating a video, like the late great Aaliyah said “if at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again” and that’s what I tend to do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being a creator is to see that you’ve inspired others. I receive messages all the time from my followers and supporters telling me I’ve inspired them to broaden their creativity by including more of their own talents to display to the world. Or sometimes when I don’t feel my best or I’m critical of my work, someone always comes and encourages me to not give up or they mention that because they’ve followed my journey and how no matter how hard it got for me I never gave up and it encourages them to never give up on their dreams and that’s the most rewarding thing for me.
