We were lucky to catch up with Jalen Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jalen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
In college, I began music production as a hobby. It was a way to free my mind and be creative outside of school and collegiate basketball. It wasn’t until my friend and ,now business partner, Solo recognized my talent and pushed me to get my art out there. My family was very supportive and my love and passion for music production grew. I invest in more equipment and dove into more videos and books about the craft. Less than a year later, I had the opportunity to learn from some amazing producers who were already very established in the Chicagoland area. Additionally, my father, DJ 50 Mille, is an amazing DJ and playing music became a way for us to spend more time together.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a music producer, I provide a personalized experience for each client. I start each session building an understanding of what exactly the artist is looking for. From then, I let the creativity flow until we reach what I call a “spark”. That spark is what carries the inspiration for the entire session and can be a melody or drum pattern. Once a solid idea is formed, I build around it and see that an entire song is complete. I am most proud when the artist is so pleased with the end product that they can’t wait to share it with the world.
As a DJ, I also aim to offer a unique musical experience to the venue and it’s guest. I pay sharp attention to the crowd I’m playing to and what gets them moving. I feed off of their energy and vice versa. What makes me proud as a DJ, is seeing everyone have fun and great memories being made through my music selection and transitions.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I moved to Nashville, I had to essentially start anew as a DJ. I didn’t have any clients, connections, or an idea of where to start. First, I put myself out there and visited many places offering my services. The second and most important step was connecting with genuine people in my profession to learn from I.e. DJ Nemo, and DJ Bailey & Jordan. From there, I stayed prepared and waited for my opportunity to prove myself. That opportunity came when those DJs need my help to fill a position.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As a producer, my reputation was bolstered when I got an epic opportunity to co-produce a record with my partner Solo for multi-platinum artist G Herbo. After that opportunity, our beat sales went through the roof and we got the reputation for making hard-hitting, yet emotion-evoking compositions.
