We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ja’korian Brookins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ja’Korian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I have been on this earth for almost 14 years and never thought I would be making a professional career out of DJing. My papa, David, used to DJ at house parties all the time. I would help set up, but I never thought I would be taking over his legacy. I remember when he asked me to press this button, play this song, or hook this wire to this port. He then told me to “look at the crowd, look at their smiles, and check out their vibes. He said that’s what DJing is all about. Making people feel good and enjoy themselves. I observed everything he did and I slowly but surely started to learn how to DJ.
If I had gone with him to all of his gigs, it would have sped up the learning process.
Patience is the most essential skill. You need to be organized and paying attention to details is a very important skill as well.
The obstacles that stood in the way were me and self-doubt. Once, I changed my mindset and way of thinking, I knew that nothing could ever stop me from achieving my goal
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I feel like I am one of the youngest DJ’s in Greenville, Texas.DJ MULAAAHHH I started when I was 11 and now I am 13. I Dj’d a few small gatherings, and then I got what I felt was my Big Break. The Semi Pro basketball team, The Texas Seveners, asked me to be their official DJ for the home basketball games. That gave me the opportunity to earn some extra income, and it allowed me to get some local exposure. Now, I have a couple of gigs per month. I’ve had the opportunity to DJ, prom sendoffs, wedding, family reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, and school functions. What sets me apart is my ambition. Sometimes, I want to quit, sometimes it’s hard, and sometimes I get frustrated, but I also have a goal to achieve and I have the encouragement of my family to keep me going.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of the most effective ways that I’ve built my audience was through my live DJing sessions in the living room of our home. I would plug up my equipment, turn on my LED lights, and go live on Facebook. I would then share that live on my Instagram page. I would play music ranging from Rap, RnB, and Pop music. Most of my customers have come from Facebook and by word of mouth. My mom also tries to make short videos of my work lol
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What is most important for me is making my mom and grandpa proud. It is also rewarding to reap the benefits of my own paycheck and buying anything I want with my money.
