We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jakill Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jakill, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I took a risk with music. R&B means so much to me. I remember wanting to be a singer. All of the 90s R&B artist had me in a chokehold. Especially destiny’s child. And when I become older I became super inspired by SZA, Summer walker, Jhene, Kehlani. I realized being an artist was for me when I took a risk and quit my job to pursue music full time.

Jakill, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Jakill, I Am an R&B artist from Atlanta Ga. I begin music early as a child. But professionally 3 years ago and been writing and recording fully for about 6 years. Music is my passion. It’s how I tell my story through my lens. Whatever I’m going through I don’t really talk about it, I go straight to the studio and sing about it. The best therapist for me has always been the microphone and pro-tools

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew about contracts and how the industry is. I learned it quite late. Maybe last year. I got with a new manager and actually learned what it’s like to have real management and deal with contracts and BMI codes etc. like it’s deeper than just singing and posting the music.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being related to. Even in the slightest, if I feel my struggles or what I’m going through can carry females, males, or people in genesis through their heartbreak it makes me feel like I’m doing something right. It’s a lot going on in the world right now, so being relatable and helping is what matters most.
