We were lucky to catch up with Jakeya LIMITLESS recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jakeya , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
A few years ago, I was in a dark place mentally and spiritually, and I had convinced myself that I was giving up on singing as well as pursuing being an artist. I literally said “I’m done”! The very next day I received a message on fb messenger from someone I’ve known for some years. We’ve only communicated in passing, at certain social events, and I hung out once at her house.
In her message, she tells me that her relationship ended with her baby dad. She caught him cheating, right after having their newborn child. Not only did they break up, but a physical altercation happened and resulted in her ex kicking her and the baby out of the house they were living in. She told me there were many days after, where she couldn’t get out of bed. She was depressed for a long time. She mentioned a time that she came to a concert where I performed, and I sung a song titled “Titanium” by Sia and David Guetta. She said it was my voice that replayed in her mind, singing the lyrics “You shoot me down, but I won’t fall, I am titanium” which comforted her and empowered her to live again. She said my voice was the “light in darkness”. She told me to never stop singing and that my voice was a gift from God!!!
So….the kindest thing that anyone has ever done, was save my life, restore my faith in my voice and talents, and motivated me to believe that I’m limitless!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a music entertainer-vocalist, songwriter and vocal coach. I’ve been a performer for over 25 years, that includes singing as mentioned, acting and a host/personality for events. As a child, I sang in church, which led to me to join a community choir that toured and sang in many cities on the east coast. We later recorded an album ,of which I was a feature soloist on one of the hit singles. I later attended the famous performing arts school in Philadelphia, CAPA,which boasts alumni such as Boys 2 Men, Jazmine Sullivan and MusiqSoulChild. It is there where I cemented my desire to pursue my music career. Attending CAPA and other music experiences, has cultivated my discipline and trajectory for developing my vocal coaching business, touring and recording. In 2008, I started JakeyaLimitless,LLC where I offer vocal coaching and mentoring, artist development techniques, performance consultations which includes curating shows, booking other artists, sound and lighting. I love to help my fellow artist bring their dreams to life. I am an artist, but I always make the time to empower and invest in other artists, I think that is what sets me apart in this very competitive field. I am proud of many things, but I revel in the joy of sustaining longevity while staying true to myself, which is dire to any artist.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Many of us have seen the movie “Sister Act 2”, one of the most outstanding scenes is Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lauryn Hill’s character’s discussion about singing in the choir, When she states “Singing doesn’t pay the bills, singing doesn’t put food on the table and singing your should’ve, could’ve would’ves”, I beg to differ. Singing has provided me food on the table, singing does and has paid my bills, singing has kept me off the streets and put clothes on my back. Most non creatives think you should have a corporate or masters degree to make something of yourself and thats not true. Creative work has definitely made millions of people millions of dollars and continues to this day. So please stop looking down on us creatives, if wasn’t for creatives, what music would you listen to, what art would you hang on your walls, there would be no Picasso, Kindred Lamar or JakeyaLimitless for you to enjoy after a long day at your corporate and career trappings that you’ve chosen for yourself.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love the freedom of creating my own schedule on my own terms while impacting so many lives through my artistry! It is so rewarding to have my Mondays off, while everyone else maybe clocking in. Every Monday is Me Time Monday where I do meaningful things that serves me and indulge in personal pastimes of sitting by water, playing in makeup, traveling with friends and whatever my soul desires.
