We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jake Smio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jake below.
Jake, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’m always learning. That’s one of my favorite things about music, every song is a different learning experience. I’m self taught so I’ve always learned through experimentation, it’s been a lot of fun.

Jake, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I first got into making music when I was in high school. I saw a friend of mine making music on his computer and I wanted to learn. I wasn’t super serious at first but as time went on I started taking it more seriously and working with other artists. In 2018 I moved from my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio to LA to pursue more opportunities.
I think the only thing that separates musicians from one another is individuality. With advancements in technology, accessibility to making music is as easy as it’s ever been, so the only thing that can separate you is simply being yourself.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The main thing society can do to support artists (especially musicians) is to do so directly. Buying music, merch, etc. directly from the artists now is more important than ever.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is the connections I make with people through my art. I’ve made some great friends and had some awesome experiences.
