We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jake Ross a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jake thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was working in an Underground agency, which we specialised in Graffiti/Gorilla advertising. I was a creative Director of some events, and thought, instead of hiring and sourcing Artists, I could do this.
I have an imagination that compliments my creative talents, and combining the two, was a lightbulb moment.
My why, is that I saw my imagination beaming at each client meeting, wanting to discuss this, and grow that, how can we get more, from just one image. And I thought, I hate those imaginative moments being stomped on, or “not enough time” (Art isn’t fast food) so I wanted to create my own brand, that can capture a thought, but process a whole event around it.
No limitations to a drawing, no limitations to a painting, no limitations to an event.
I saw a hole in the industry, where I wanted to explore growth through drawing, panting and events.
I also feel, the artistic world in Australia and America is pretty closed circle, I wanted to a brand that included every path, from graffiti, to contemporary, skateboarding to surfing, dancing to fighting. I wanted to include and for them to bring their own thoughts and emotions to my event/pieces.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am originally from the Military, I broke my back on a mission, and that slowed my life down, I was then working at an advertising agency whist in Rehab, as I obtained my communication degree whilst in the military, it was there which I saw a hole in the industry, of building a connection between what you paint on the canvas and how else you can grow it. From one drawing I see endless possibilities of how else I can attract emotion from you, wether turning a drawing into a fashion item, or an event where we can create 3d model images, extremely large murals or small contemporary paintings.
I like the idea of exploring the imagination from one thought, and then driving that with hard work to capture an event or purpose for that thought.
I am an acrylic artist, that explores my work through gallery launches, with canvases, 3d models, murals, clothing and most importantly, a Brand!
I am a brand that works closely to commercial spaces, either creative control of launching Cider beers with Carlton Draught in Australia, or clients that are having issues with packaging, I creative control the process of making every single inch of the project more creative.
I paint using clean lines, now exploring more finer black outlines.
I am now launching a clothing line, to make my art more accessible to everyone.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to completely imerse myself within the imaginative world of Jake Ross’s growth. To travel internationally, showcase my art through places like Paris, Tokyo, New York and have these monstrous events to marry alongside. Working in Paris but showcasing a complete Jake Ross Circus event, many canvases, many side shows, weird music productions, lots of wine etc. To have the freedom to travel to destinations, with a budget of being able to bring an event alongside my art. My goals are to show immersive events with my art.
I would also say, I want to be one of the most talented artists within the world, to have a brand that compliments that, and shows value through an international ladder.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I initially started growing as I gave the audience something, I used stories, and email chains to educate my audience with how they could start a brand, and had workshops along the way to interact with my audience. I’m very open to showing what I’m up too, and how we can push a desire into a reality.
I think the most important thing for a brand to do is be human, that’s on socials alongside with emails to, handling clients and audience goes hand in hand.
