We recently connected with Jake Muise and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
Whenever you can write it down!
In a previous role, I learned a tough lesson by not having an agreement in writing and I’ve carried that lesson forward by trying to document important agreements of any kind. From position descriptions to marketing plans; clear documentation not only ensures mutual understanding but also promotes transparency and accountability within an organization.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Aloha, my name is Jake Muise I’m the CEO and Co-Founder at Maui Nui Venison. I grew up hunting in northern Alberta Canada and was shocked to learn all about axis deer when he I was introduced to the species by multi-generational subsistence hunters in Hawai’i. Curiosity turned into an obsession, and I founded a research-based non-profit, the Axis Deer Institute, and after a decade of research, I co-founded Maui Nui Venison.
Maui Nui grew out of his passion to create a full-bodied solution to balance Axis deer populations on Maui, solving for the unique challenges of this species in Hawaiʻi, while also channeling that work into nutrient-dense food for customers and community.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Be genuine! In my experience, authenticity and genuine storytelling have been incredibly effective in growing our customer base. When communicating with customers, it’s crucial to share information that stems from a genuine place, as customers can now more than ever easily discern authenticity. This authenticity is further reinforced by having a clear mission statement that resonates with everyone on the team. When every member of the organization believes in and embodies the mission, it ensures consistency in voice and messaging across all platforms. This consistency not only builds trust but also strengthens the brand’s identity. Ultimately, genuine storytelling coupled with a clear and resonant mission statement has been instrumental in our growth over time.”
