Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jake Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jake, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
We saw that people were seeking adventure and fitness as well as an event to showcase their hard work. Obstacle course racing definitely had most of that already. We wanted to add a new or upgraded version of OCR by introducing a warzone and things that only we could provide. We knew that if we added a few things like explosives, gunfire, flamethrowers, and big permanent obstacles, that we would draw adventurous athletes. Due to our permanent and privately owned location in southern Ohio, we can do all of it and give a wild experience.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Everyone at War-X is a veteran and/or first responder. We crafted our event to give an experience of what we have been through. The highs and lows, the struggles and victories shape everyone’s life. We are constantly evolving to keep the challenges new and exciting. Many who complete our event are not athletes or athletic, but determined to do it. That’s all it takes to complete our event. It’s not all competition and speed. Many groups come out to team build or achieve a goal they set.
We facilitate achievement and memories through shared difficulty, adrenaline, and friendship.

Have you ever had to pivot?
We initially created War-X to be a survival event with obstacles. It was a 24 hour escape and evade evolution that proved to be too intense for the masses. We realized that to grow, we had to adjust our expectations of what the participants really wanted and were prepared to do.
Although the participants of the first few events loved it and have become lifelong friends, we could not market that type of event to the masses. We knew that a more mainstream approach to a popular sport such as obstacle course racing would allow us to grow.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Myself and five family members self funded War-X. Fortunately, we all have specific skills that allowed us to each do parts of the business that most others have to pay outside help for. We have construction experts, graphic designers, web developers, logistics and event planners, as well as many applicable skills most of us learned in the military.
