Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jake Kyman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jake thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission in creating videos is to show a meaningful story with true raw emotion. As a filmmaker you have to make something good look great and what society has often done today with all media is show you the average or bad and make it look great. The industry and social media these days try to give you something average and paint it as great just so they can make money which leaves you feeling upset or disappointed eventually. I want my art to show the great in reality and make you see the truth in what I see and then you can make your opinion on if it’s good or not. My mission is to strive and give you my best vision of truth through film and media so that it can connect with you on a deeper level.
Jake, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jake Kyman and I played basketball my whole life eventually playing D1 at UCLA. Film and TV were always my passion outside of basketball and when college ended I made the decision to follow my true path as a filmmaker instead of pursuing professional basketball options. I knew I wanted to be on sets making movies and wanted to follow my dream. I had potential opportunities to start low in the industry but I wanted to be apart of the creative process so I bought a camera and gear and decided the only way to become a director is to BE a director. @jk.visions was born and I’ve now served over 25 clients in just a few months and am focused on growing and getting better everyday.
My hard work and work ethic in basketball taught me that it’s all about falling in love with the process and the results will take care of themselves. I wake up everyday trying to get better somehow with that’s learning or refining my filmmaking skills. I’ve also learned in basketball that it’s all about the team and you can’t get much done alone by yourself.. When I work with my clients I trust in the collaborative creation process so we can build the best project together so that you can reach your goals. I set myself apart from others because I care about the vision and making the best possible product. The problem I solve with all my clients is figuring out what their goals are and what they want. Some need marketing, some want deep stories, and some just need cool videos for their website. I’m going to give my grounded approach to media with my artistic touch on it to give you something real rather than a reel.
I provide professional filmmaking and videography services to all different types of people, businesses, and brands. Every industry has a different medium and that’s what I love about film is tapping into all the different types of filmmaking. I’ve worked with music artists, business entrepreneurs, food brands, sports games, and more! Getting to create for all different types of people is what inspires me to keep going in my field and pushes further to tell greater stories of more different people.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve built to almost 2,000 followers on social media organically in almost 4 months. I started my film Instagram account separate from my main account so that I can reach a larger much different audience. As someone in my industry having a following is extremely important for one, posting your work and sharing your art with the world and secondly, it’s an amazing tool to network with and find business through from high level influencers, to musicians, artists, athletes, even down to your mom and pop shops that could use some help. If you want to build your social media and reach an audience I would say the absolute number one thing you need to do is post a reel everyday. No matter how bad or how good just posting once a day will show your relevance on the platform and give you more opportunities than someone who posts less. In today’s world social media is the biggest tool for everything more than it was 5 years ago. If you can capitalize on your content it will benefit you in ways you wouldn’t even know. That’s why I’ve gone down the route to work and do a lot of content for social media because I get to create videos I love and help build other people, businesses, and brands.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is creating an emotion or feeling within the audience or viewer. When someone comes up to me and says “Wow, I loved your video!” or “You’re video inspired me!” it is the greatest feeling in the world because I know whether anyone wants to admit or not, I emotionally made their day or life better by making them feel a certain emotion. Just as anyone watches a certain movie or genre because they want to feel a type of way is the same reason I feel when I’m able to change someone’s emotions for the better through my videos.
