Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jake Bird. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jake, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I would have most definitely liked to of started out much sooner in life. I don’t feel I started out incredibly late, but with how unpredictable life can be, I feel as if I could be much further ahead than where I am at now. I have been off and on playing the piano and guitar throughout my life, but everything has only been self-taught. I think if I had an actual instructor or more self-discipline when I was young, I could be where I want to be or at least much closer today. I started investing and making full original music with what I had at around age 20, after finishing two years of college. I was still here and there for probably 1-2 years not knowing if I could do something with it, but I kept going and glad I did. Now that I am turning 27 here soon, I would say I have improved a large amount within the five years I have been creating with the time I am given,
Jake, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name, as well as my artist name, is Jake Bird. I come from a smaller town in northern Minnesota and grew up with a lot of music in the family. Although, the music I grew up around for the majority of my childhood never caught my attention. I didn’t seem to feel connected to it as much as the others did around me. As I was growing up though, I stumbled across more and more music I truly enjoyed. A big influence in my own family for learning about more music and picking up a guitar is my older brother. I think that’s what kind of pushed along the journey in the very early stages. I was off and on with music until I started investing into myself and believing more of what I was capable of doing in my early 20’s. I am wanting to create music that can resonate with people for years to come. Whether it’s the feeling of the song itself as a whole or the lyrics that mean something significant to them in their own way. With that being my main idea around my music and with how I grew up, I plan to make my music that targets a wide variety of people to the best of my abilities. That being said, I would say I am proud with what I have put out so far on all streaming platforms.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a small independent artist is if people actually enjoy listening to what you have put out. It’s if they find something special in it themselves and what you have spent hours and hours creating. Not only that, but something I struggle with is liking my own work after it’s all done. There has been countless lyrics and full songs I have discarded. So if I like it enough to put it out for everyone else to see, with people truly enjoying it, that just makes it that much more meaningful to me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would say there is a lot of different factors that help push me towards my goals or mission on my music journey. Although, the main purpose of what sparked this journey is rather short. I love the whole creative process of what goes into making music and what it does to other people around the world. The affect of something as simple as lyrics and an instrument and what it brings is astonishing to me. How music has endless possibilities and yet a simple four chord song with a catchy chorus could have you hooked.
