We recently connected with JaKaila Mason and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JaKaila thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How has Covid changed your business model?
I did not have an in person selling event from March 2020- August 2021. During this year I adapted to virtual pop up events. This was very new to me. I was super nervous, because I had only conducted my business in two manners: in person or via my website. During the beginning of the pandemic, the virtual events were successful. This helped me increase my online audience. Overall Covid has helped me become more open minded regarding my business affairs.
JaKaila, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I fell in love with the hobby of creating jewelry. Oddly, my journey began with having too many bracelets, that I was not wearing. I would purchase jewelry sets. The sets would normally include around 6 bracelets, but I would probably only wear 2-3 out if the selection. I watched a lot of jewelry making tutorials and purchased some beads from a local craft store. I attended my first craft show as a vendor for my business in 2014. I’ve been working behind my brand consistently since. My business has evolved from a craft to a brand. I enjoy working with my clients to help determine the best custom piece for them. I guide my clients with assisting in choosing the type of materials, bead patterns, etc. that they would adore. Many of my referrals are for custom orders. This is great for my creativity. There are many jewelry makers., however my creativity and understanding, and deliverance sets my items apart. Accessories are a representation of your style, mood, and expression.
It is important to be heard and seen. I would like for potential clients to know that when you work with me to design and create a custom order, I see and hear you.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Most of my new clients have come from social media. On my social media pages, new clients are able to see creations and decide for themselves if our styles collide. I post a lot of the custom items in my stories. I like to highlight that those items are custom made. This reminds my followers that, they have the option to have a completely unique jewelry set made just for them.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I travel to conferences with my jewelry throughout the year. This was how majority
of my sales were previously made. I also
meet a lot of new clients at these events.
During the spring of 2020, the lockdown, all
of the scheduled conferences were
cancelled. I was worried how my business would be effected, especially since most of my sales generated from in person events. I began posting more on social
media to help with the lack of sales. This did increase my sales slightly. After
a few months, events then started to
transition from live in person events to
virtual pop up shops. I’ve since hosted a few
virtual vending events. This was amazing for
me. My online sales increased
tremendously. This turn of events made me
better realize the value of having an online presence.
