We recently connected with Jaiquai Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Jaiquai , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Well, it first started when I was maybe 10 years old. I would always rhyme, and freestyle to beats, or on apps I would find. I always enjoyed it and had fun with it. At the end of my senior year in highschool which is when I was 17, I started to take it seriously. I’m not sure how I learned to do it, I think it was more so a god given talent that I found out I had and run with it.
Some things I could have done to speed up the learning process, probably would’ve been to not be so hard on myself on the beggining. While learning you have to be prepared to make mistakes, and learn from them. That is what builds character.
Every skill you learn is essential, never make one more or less then the other, because every skill you got can help towards your career.
A big obstacle that stands in the way is just trying to manage, life, music, and all your personal problems all at once. Sometimes it gets hard. But this is my passion. I encourage anyone reading this to believe in your self, and even when times get hard to never give up. Things are always going to stand in the way. Just got to keep going.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For people who may not have read about me, or even heard of me, first things first my name is Jaiquai, also known as Jpaq. I explained briefly already why I got into this industry, but really I just always loved it and always had a passion for it. What really set it off, is when my uncle was passing away, and my family and I were in the hospital. My uncle asked me to grab my headphones from my dad’s car. So I did, he said he wanted to listen to Kevin gates. So I thought to myself, he’s passing away and he still wants to listen to music. That showed me how powerful music is, and how powerful music can be. So ever since then I strive to become someone’s favorite artist, and to touch someone, or even make someone dance with my music.
I am an artist, a songwriter, a performer, and I can also do some mixing and mastering as well. As I’m still making my way to the top I tend to focus on my own music, but I do often do mixes for people, or just give people advice or encouragement. When I do anything for someone, I treat it as its my own, because I want them to be satisfied, I want my work to show, and I want them to come back happy and recommend me to others. Same thing goes if someone gets a feature from me. If someone is paying for a feature, that means they see something in me, and respect my worth. So I am going to treat the song as if it’s my own and put my all into it.
Well, I can say I’m most proud of the way I keep going, and stay motivated. I’m not going to lie, things get in the way, life gets in the way, emotions and all types of other things. But I am proud that I always stay on the right path and follow my dreams.
Again my name is Jpaq, and if you are reading this I would appreciate ANY and all types of support. Even if that means following me on social media, sharing a post, streaming my music (which can be found on all streaming platforms). Etc. I appreciate it all.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
For example: In the city I am from, and currently live in here in Columbus Ohio, there is a lot of animosity, hate, and envy. There are lots of people that don’t give someone else a chance if they don’t make the same music as them, or live the same lifestyle as them. People also are jealous, and don’t want to see someone win before them. I think if everyone put their pride to the side and came together, and supported one another it would help put eyes on our city. It would the artist, that dont get the attention they deserve get heard. It’s free to support someone. I would love to see it happen, I would love to see everyone come together, respect each other and work together to help us be heard, because no one can do it on their own. Without the fans, the supporters, and even sometimes in some ways the hate, the artist have no motivation to push.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it’s being able to express myself however I want. It’s being able to create something that someone else can relate to. It’s just the love of the game. I enjoy every aspect of it, from creating the song, performing it, it’s all fun to me. Most importantly is that I love what I create and it feels good that others do as well.
