We recently connected with JaiNishia Njie Savage and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JaiNishia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What can you share with us about the story behind how you found your key vendors?
Finding a sustainable manufacturer for candles was a journey that required careful consideration and perseverance. I began by researching potential partners who aligned with our eco-friendly values. After a thorough search, I identified a manufacturer that not only had a commitment to sustainability but also boasted a Leaping Bunny certification, guaranteeing the use of eco-friendly ingredients.
When I reached out to them, I emphasized our strict standards for quality and sustainability. I explained in detail what we needed, from the ingredients to the packaging materials. This open and transparent communication was crucial in establishing a strong partnership.
One valuable lesson I learned was the importance of due diligence when vetting manufacturers. I had previously dealt with suppliers who couldn’t meet our sustainability standards, leading to product inconsistencies and disappointment among our customers. It reinforced the necessity of aligning with partners who share our values and are capable of upholding our standards.
Ultimately, by working closely with this Leaping Bunny-certified manufacturer and conveying our specific needs, we secured a great deal and ensured that our candles were not only high-quality but also environmentally friendly, guaranteeing their longevity and satisfaction among our customers.
JaiNishia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Love and Happiness Sanctuary is an eco-friendly and sustainable candle brand located on the West Coast.
We produce their candles in small batches, emphasizing environmentally-friendly practices. Love and Happiness Sanctuary specializes in PCOS-friendly care, anxiety relief, calm digestive issues, and promoting peace and relaxation through our high-quality candles.
Savage Finery, on the other hand, is a small batch sustainable jewelry brand with a strong commitment to reducing waste in the jewelry industry.
Our focus is on creating beautiful jewelry while minimizing the environmental impact. We also have a strong community-oriented approach, aiming to give back at every opportunity and make a positive difference in their community.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After operating successfully for a few years, I noticed a decline in customer retention for my small accessories brand, Love and Happiness Sanctuary. While researching market trends, I discovered a rising demand for eco-friendly and sustainable home care products, which I decided to pivot towards. This niche was exactly what I had been looking for and was steadily growing.
After being diagnosed with PCOS in 2018, I had to make significant changes to my life. This included transitioning my home, lifestyle, and business to support my needs in the clean candle industry. I focused on creating candles that were non-toxic, vegan friendly, and sustainable.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The initial capital I used to start my business was saved from losing a job and moving to LA. I spent about $500 getting the initial inventory for the launch and then slowly used the profits to reinvest into the business until approximately 2021. During COVID, we secured an additional 1500 grants, which allowed us to continue our endeavor, rebrand, and file for our trademark.
