We were lucky to catch up with Jainika Shah recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jainika, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I always have been intrigued with art and design. I loved exploring new spaces and that really drew me towards architecture. As an Indian architect with a master’s degree from Pratt University, my journey delved into harnessing dynamic and evolving principles of design to produce architectural endeavors for the betterment of the society. My mission has always been to create meaningful designs that add value to the existing community.
From a very young age I was exposed to the concept of sustainability. This has been one the key driving factors in my design. In one of my latest projects I have explored the use of Mycelium, an eco-friendly biodegradable material. Mycelium is a long thread like mushroom roots, which typically grow in a humid and shaded area. These extremely thin white threads grow in all directions forming a strong web. Mycelium is a renewable material, unlike traditional materials like steel and concrete. This low-cost material offers a promising step toward an architectural vision that is at one with nature.
The project is a house constructed with this material and draws its inspiration from its intertwining threads. Mimicking the growth of mycelium, the intent of the design was to integrate the built space with the surrounding landscape while exploring the interplay of humans. The architecture feels like it’s diffusing and developing freely. The generative and ever evolving form resembles the growth of a mushroom. The surrounding landscape is interwoven with the interior spaces thus blurring the boundaries between the two.

Jainika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an internationally experienced architectural designer currently based in San Diego, California. I aim at seamlessly blending design concepts and building science to create various staggering user experiences. As an architect I communicate through space and form. My work showcases a built piece of art that is inhabited by others which is not just a physical but also a visual representation of a design concept. From selecting materials to providing a diverse color palette, this is an art form that enriches the life of every individual in its own special way.
I honed my skills at Mumbai university and Pratt institute and thus my journey began as an architect. With over 8 years of experience, I have worked on a diverse range of projects including Science & Technology, industrial, commercial workplace, higher education, residential etc across USA and India. Throughout my career I have overseen production and design of different architectural marvels while providing user and client satisfaction. My mission has always been to create meaningful designs that add value to the existing community. My consistent dedication has earned me great recognition in my field. Beyond my professional undertakings, I believe in giving back to the community, intending to share my knowledge and help shaping the creative minds of the future.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have been exposed to the concepts of sustainability very early on and it has been a primary driving factor for all my designs and concepts. I design and create architectural endeavors for the betterment of the society. My aim is to seamlessly blend design concepts and building sciences to create various staggering user experiences. Beyond my professional undertakings, I believe in giving back to the community, intending to share my knowledge and help shaping the creative minds of the future.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As an architectural designer, seeing my design concepts being built and used is one of the most rewarding aspects. When my first project was built, I was content and so grateful. I will cherish that feeling forever.
