Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaimie Harvey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaimie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
Although I’m technically a contractor vs. business owner in my role as a travel advisor, I’ve invested both time and money into personal and professional development through firsthand experience. I started my role as a travel advisor by meeting and using a travel advisor myself. I trusted her expert opinion as well as her personal approach to assisting her clients. I saw the value her service provided as well as the passion she had in what she was “selling.” The passion and knowledge provided was contagious and catapulted me into a career I never knew I was meant to explore. Because of the level of care I had for the product and service I was providing my prospective clients, I knew I would need to experience and share tips/tricks etc. that I had actually experienced myself. Within the first couple of weeks of starting my travel advisor career, I traveled to Walt Disney World. I began investing both time and money into myself and my career. My business started to grow organically from me just sharing my moments and recommendations while on vacation myself. In the first few months I began immersing myself into the culture and even traveling by myself multiple times to research for my clients. It is true that there is beauty outside of your comfort zone. I know now that these research trips, as I call them, would help me grow both personally and professionally. As a result of the time and money invested, I’ve been able to obtain several new clients in less than 6 months of exposure as a travel advisor. My confidence has grown tremendously as a result of the investment in myself and my business.
Jaimie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for all things Disney and Universal started at the age of 2, when I took my first trip to Orlando, and visited all the parks with my family. I grew up in the Midwest, where all our vacations were to Florida, and I was fortunate enough to visit Disney and Universal on multiple occasions as a child. Those trips are truly some of my core memories. My love for Disney movies, music, and parks has grown tremendously over the years and it has become my “happy place” in my adult life more than I could have ever imagined. I am a Disney adult and lover of a classic Disney Parks Dole Whip. However, I’m equally a Gryffindor and Butter Beer connoisseur. for all of the fellow Harry Potter nerds out there. As for Universal, I have a love for all things Wizarding World. I was one of those kids who was at the release party for Harry Potter books back when Borders was still around, and you will catch me watching a Harry Potter movie all year round to this day. I love planning trips of any size or budget and can be as hands on as my clients like. I am very “Type A”, so plans are my jam. As a former teacher, I love teaching clients about all that the resorts have to offer while also learning from new experiences myself. I firmly believe there is nothing like sharing that passion with someone and seeing the joy it brings into their life.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Honestly, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been being authentically myself. I am genuine in my recommendations and opinions in a professional matter. When it comes down to making suggestions or any type of proposal, my clients know I’ve done the research. As a result of building a relationship and building trust, I’ve been able to market myself as a subject matter expert as well. Most of my clients have been referred to me by word of mouth. They often tell me they’ve been following me and know me as the subject matter expert or they were referred to me by a previous client.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One book that really changed my mindset is “Extreme Ownership.” The book details how U.S. Navy Seals lead and win. The concept not only highlights what it means to be mentally strong, but also how owning everything in your world and taking responsibility for your actions can help you execute on anything in life. It doesn’t matter your rank or position, everyone can be a leader.
