We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaimie Beebe and Jake Deptula a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jaimie Beebe and Jake Deptula, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
We learned podcasting by doing it! Neither of us had done a podcast before and didn’t know the ins and outs of putting one together. We had to learn the technical aspects of it, how to find guests, marketing, editing, and story telling. While we both worked in TV & Film before podcasting is a much different medium to be involved with. We took the “learn as you go” approach with a lot of trial & error before getting it down. And of course, we googled everything we don’t know, and do loads of research to keep up with all the new podcasting trends. Our best skills turned out to be the natural curiosity we both have to uncover a great story and to learn everything we can about what we’re interested in. We interview stalking survivors on “Strictly Stalking” and through their stories we learned about the crime of stalking along with our listeners.
There have been a lot of obstacles, but we’re both very positive people so we try to use each setback as a learning experience to move even further forward.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Jaimie Beebe and Jake Deptula produce and host the extremely popular True Crime Podcast Series, “Strictly Stalking”. Each week we interview someone who has survived at the hands of a stalker. We discuss the types of stalking, give advice and tips on how to stay safe, talk about dating & relationships, and how stalking affects the lives of our guests. Our goal is to create awareness about the horrific crime of stalking in order to save lives. The more stalking is talked about and the more people know and understand the crime, the more often survivors can get justice in the legal system. We want people to know that our podcast is a safe space to talk about what they’ve gone through and a platform for their voice to be heard.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media has played an intricate part in our podcast on many levels. We’ve found that many people have started going to social media to share parts of their survival stories, and because of that, it’s opened the door for podcasts like ours. We give stalking survivors a larger and longer platform to talk about more than just the story of what happened to them – we’re able to give advice, tips, and resources to help others in similar situations. We’ve also been able to use social media as a secondary way to attract listeners to the podcast. We give them a short video describing the episode in order to draw them into wanting to hear the whole story.
Social media has also been a great way to connect with our listeners and give resources to people that need help but aren’t in a position to share their story yet. We love that we can use social media to connect with people all over the world!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
We love this question! We both do a lot of work in the creative world beyond the podcast and the single best thing people can do to support is to share, like, listen, and consume the work we’re putting out. By sharing something you like, it helps other people find us and can help open up a lot of difficult discussions about crime, victim shaming, stalking, relationships, domestic violence, and more. Sharing is the best way someone can help us create the awareness we need to help other stalking victims. By consuming and listening to our podcast it helps us keep our sponsors – so don’t skip over all the ads every time haha! And if you hear an ad that you think is interesting, take the opportunity to check it out. We carefully choose the sponsors for our podcast and love using the products.
Another great way to support us – and any podcast – is to leave a review. A great review for a podcast you like goes a long way. It helps us gain more listeners and keeps us in the charts.
