We were lucky to catch up with Jaime Swezey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jaime, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Even from early on I was obsessed with film. I would frequently watch films on repeat in my youth and imitate my favorite characters. I even tried to get into a big film that was being shot locally, however that was unsuccessful. Ultimately I decided I should be responsible and study STEM to become a dentist. I went all through college and got my Chemistry degree. I applied to dental schools and got interviews, but I just wasn’t excited about it.
I decided to give acting a try so I took an on-camera class because I had no idea how to even start. I began signing up for auditions as soon as I knew how and immediately realized how much I loved acting, even auditioning. It’s such a freeing and fun experience. I ended up booking my first role, but re-watching that footage is difficult because it was definitely a learning project for me. My second job ended up being one of my favorite roles though, and it cemented this dream for me. There is nothing else I could even see myself doing. Auditioning and being on set continue to bring me so much joy at every opportunity, and I’m grateful I’m in a position that I can pursue my passion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m an actor and I generally work in small indie films for the time being, predominantly short films. Honestly I’m most proud of getting to work with such talented and passionate people. I know I should brag about my own passion and achievements, but being able to help bring a director’s vision to life through my acting is the most satisfying part of my job and the part of which I’m most proud.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have a multiple goals when it comes to acting; some are silly, and some are reasonable. For me, my favorite genres have always been sci-fi and fiction, so being able to work on more projects like that would be very welcome. I have worked on two sci-fi projects so far and I’ve absolutely loved both of them. I find them so creative and inspiring. Plus, it’s very fun to live, even if temporarily, in an alternate world.
Another goal I have that is a bit silly and unreachable would be to play a villain. I’ve played a somewhat nasty character, but it’s my dream to play a full-blown villain. Unfortunately I look very much the opposite so that is a very far-off and somewhat of a caste in the sky.
Fundamentally though my goal is just to play characters with whom the audience can connect and empathize. As long as my projects can elicit that reaction, then I’m delighted with my work.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I can only speak for the industry I’m in, but what I would suggest is seeing more independent films. A lot of the big studios focus on blockbusters these days which really quashes funding that goes towards creativity. Staying informed on what independent films are coming to theaters can support more original films but it could also open one to an incredible movie going experience.
Another aspect is just showing general enthusiasm for shows or projects you enjoy. The more people talk about a new show, the more likely it will continue, and the more likely other shows you might like can get picked up.
