We were lucky to catch up with Jaime Saunders recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jaime, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
As a child, my aunt was a photographer and always stressed the importance of memories. She lost her battle with cancer in her 20’s when I was only 13, but the pictures she took have provided memories that will last forever. In my late 20’s my mom brought me my aunt’s camera and told me to capture every memory I could, just like her sister did. I truly wish, in that moment, I had taken the chance to start my own business and follow my love of photography. So, looking back, that’s the only thing I’d change. I would’ve taken the risk sooner.

Jaime, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Originally, I started with family photography as Creative Pixels. And, although I absolutely loved watching the families grow and expand, in 2021 I rebranded, becoming J.Lee Photography and partnering with Straight Entertainment to expand into our current specialties. Weddings, graduation and boudoir are now our main focus. Creative Pixels is still open for family and newborn photography, but the main focus is on the rebrand.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Most of my sessions come from word of mouth. I make every photoshoot an experience. You will catch me lying on the ground or climbing trees to get the perfect angle. You will see me on the dance floor at your reception to capture the different faces of the ones there to celebrate you. You can see and feel my passion at every shoot. I want everyone to know the importance of the moment, so I try to bring that to every session.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
For the longest time I struggled with knowing my value. I had to remember that what I offer is priceless and unlearn undervaluing myself. Before rebranding myself I used to actually “haggle” with clients about pricing on sessions. I had to realize that I have to set boundaries and believe in myself and know that the prices I set are very fair and the experience and memories and skill are worth it.
