We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jaime Medina. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jaime below.
Jaime, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
I began training Kalen Jones in 2019 as one of my first full-time students. He was a 10th grader from Eastlake High School who was very small and skinny at the time. He had a ton of potential as I saw his leg was very explosive. We trained weekly for hours at a time, working the small details of our craft and breaking down his film on the field was a huge help to his development. He was the starter of Varsity that upcoming season but due to COVID, the team didn’t do as well as we planned. His senior year was incredible, averaging 49 yards per punt and connecting on a 47 yard field goal. He is currently committed to play football at UCLA and has a very strong chance of starting next season.
Jaime, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jaime Medina and I founded New Gen Kicking, a kicking and punting program located in San Diego, CA. We began training in 2020 and have worked with 50+ students in the last two years. In 2022, we had two high school specilaists sign with Division One FBS Football Programs (UCLA & Army). Our goal here at New Gen Kicking is to provide our local trainees with elite level kicking and punting training and the exposure to play at the collegiate level. We offer private one on one lessons, group sessions, camps/showcases and other packages suited to the need of every student. We help our athletes with understanding the recruiting process and how to earn an offer from college programs. What makes New Gen unique is we don’t only focus on the kicking aspect of the game, we are developing learning and training habits, how to conduct yourself as a collegiate prospect on and off the field along with learning to use social media as a tool in the recruiting process. I’m most proud of the relationships i’ve built along the way with all the students i’ve trained over the last few years. Learning how to work with them, speak to them, what makes them respond vs shut down. When you train with New Gen Kicking, you join the New Gen Family. It’s not just a kicking program, we are definitely a little family and always welcoming of new members.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My background in the kicking game has definitely helped build the New Gen brand. I was a former high school All-American punter at Point Loma High School, averaging 48.6 yards per punt in 2015. Having earned a spot on the Sacramento State roster, I went 7/9 as a freshman kicker for the Hornets. I attended Southwestern College in 2018 where I was ranked the #1 Junior College Kicker in America and had several division one offers from programs like Texas Tech & SDSU before injury. I decided to begin my coaching career soon after that and have enjoyed every minute of it!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started an instagram account and branded ourselves as New Gen Kicking. We began growing in the kicking community and as we began training more and more students and seeing the results on the field is when we really started to take off. In under 2 years, we’ve grown to 1.2k followers on instagram as well as started a YouTube channel.
