Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jailan Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jailan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
At the age of 16 I decided to commit myself to a career in music. During that time, I was a junior at South Florence High School located in my hometown Florence, South Carolina. I was a trombonist for my school’s marching band and concert band.
I decided music was going to be my career because during that time my passion for music started to become a lifestyle and something I did not want to put down. I began committing myself to consistent practice and started teaching myself music theory and bass guitar.

Jailan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Even though I’ve been a musician since the age of 12. (The first instrument I learned how to play was the trombone) My understanding of what I wanted my music career to look like wasn’t crystallized until I pursued 4 years of study at my alma mater, the College of Charleston.
At the College of Charleston, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Arts Management. By taking those courses, I learned about the business side of music and the arts which inspired me to have my own business in the music industry and pursue a career as a recording and performing musician.
Since graduating from the College of Charleston in May 2021, I’ve been running a successful podcast with one of my good friends Marco Incampo. The name of our podcast is JusMusic and we interview musicians, DJs, artists, bloggers, and all involved in the local Charleston music scene and beyond. We also host live music events around Charleston to further engage with the music community. You can follow us on Instagram @jusmusicpodcast.
I am also the founder and band leader of my group, the JP Band. The band was launched during the fall of 2023 and my bandmates are Jorge Chocobar (keyboardist), Justin McKenzie (drummer), and Carl Taylor II (guitarist). My band specializes in covering and performing songs across many genres from R&B to Jazz, Christian, Pop music, and more. We’ve been blessed to achieve fast growth with our group between 2023 and 2024 performing at the Historic Charleston Foundation for their presentation of the Charleston Festival. We’ve also performed at The Dewberry, Hotel Bennett, Tobin’s Market, Flowertown Festival, YMCA Summerville, the Preservation Society of Charleston 70th Caroloplois Awards, and many other locations. You can follow the band on Instagram @onlyonejpband.
I also own a radio show called JW Radio partnered with WDRB Media where I broadcast music from my catalogue as an artist along with music from other artists. I also highlight my band, podcast, and other businesses I want to support. To find out more info about my radio show send me an email to [email protected]
I also give music lessons (bass guitar, keyboard, trombone, and music production) and own an e-commerce site selling health and wellness products. Feel free to email me about that as well.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the beauty of impacting people. Throughout all of my vocations, I make it a priority to be a blessing to others and uplift people because that’s how we change the culture and move forward as a society.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Some books I highly recommend to all entrepreneurs are The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and for entrepreneurs who have a relationship with Jesus Christ, definitely read the Bible. Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite scriptures to live by.
And I highly suggest taking advantage of the resource that is networking with like-minded individuals in your area. Building relationships is so important to success not just as an entrepreneur but to your success in life.
