Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaila Colvin . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaila , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents have impacted my life tremendously. It is a great feeling to have people in your corner rooting for you. They have been there for advice , encouragement , and simply just being there for periods of ups and downs. It is important for parents to support their children and give them the opportunity to find their way. They never forced me to go to school and they never told me that my business would fail.

Jaila , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began selling hair products in 2018 while a student at Savannah State University. I always had a love for natural hair and wanted to encourage my peers to love their strands and be confident. I made a few Whipped Shea Butters and it sold out , I seen the need and demand there. I was completely surprised, but that’s how Curls On Crack started. Now I provide a self care class called a “Sip & Whip” where people can make their own cosmetics. I am proud of how I’ve stayed down , I wasn’t always consistent but I am now. My customers , family, and inner circle keep me going and they always send me love .
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes , I manufacture my own products. In the beginning , I started with simple things like butter and oils. I was knowledgeable about simple products, but I definitely learned quick it was a lot I didn’t know. I had to learn about formulations, ingredients, preservatives , and so many more things. If I could start over, I would learn all those things beforehand. It is easier to start correctly than having to backtrack.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started by business with under $100, I took some of my savings and made my first batch of things. I will always tell anyone if you can be self funded , if it is possible , and if you can start , START! If you stay waiting on the “perfect amount of money” you will be waiting forever. I did receive a prize from a pitch completion , which was very rewarding and I continue to apply to grants and loans.
