We recently connected with Jaida Berry and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaida, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I first picked up sewing by watching YouTube videos and being determined. In high school, I was excited to create a pleated skirt with an invisible zipper, so I taught myself the basics. Later, I took a sewing class for hands-on experience, which was the end of my formal training. Looking back, I realize that pursuing a formal design education could have helped me learn faster and overcome the challenges I faced without structured lessons. Understanding body measurements and pattern making are crucial skills for clothing design, and mastering these basics makes the whole process easier.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I developed a passion for fashion and design by thrift shopping with my stylish grandma as a kid. My crafty mom taught me to be creative with my hands, while my childhood friend inspired me to be artistic. Combining all these influences, I love creating wearable art. Fashion can uplift my mood, and I believe in the saying “look good, feel good.” In the competitive fashion industry, it’s crucial to find your niche, connect with your audience, and stay true to your brand’s story and identity. My proudest achievement is how my unique experiences have influenced my ability to design wearable art that combines fashion with personal expression. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to understand that my work goes beyond just fashion; it’s about creating pieces that embody the idea of “look good, feel good.” My brand is all about being genuine and staying true to my creative vision in a crowded industry. Each piece I make shows my deep love for fashion and my commitment to making art that elevates both style and mood.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, it’s the joy of transforming a personal story or concept into art that others can enjoy. I love the process of bringing a design to life with a specific person or narrative in mind and seeing it materialize in the physical world.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Realizing the importance of having a supportive community during your creative journey sooner would have been great. Being part of a group where you can learn and grow alongside others can make a huge difference. Connecting with people who have been through similar experiences is both inspiring and comforting.
