We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaicko Lawrence a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jaicko, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a professional career in music as early as 10 years old . Growing up in a musical home , watching my father rehearse with his band on evenings after school , I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Jaicko, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
First of all I no longer call myself a singer / songwriter/ producer , although I am those things professionally, I identify as a Son of Jesus and this beautiful gift he has given me I get to express HIM through it ! I got into the music industry at a very young age (13) . I put out an independent album in Barbados that sold about 6,000 plus copies , that was my first time I considered myself as an industry professional . From there the journey continued internationally. I had the opportunity traveling to the US to meet with several major labels and at that point there was no turning back, I became passionate about becoming a global superstar. Fast forward to 17 years old , after many highs and lows , many travels back and forth to the U.S and hundreds of Demos later , I finally landed a major record deal with Capitol Records and there I released my international debut single “ Oh Yeah “ Feat Snoop Dogg , followed by my Debut Album entitled “ Can I “ – I’m most proud of how God has kept me . Being involved in such a fast paced , competitive industry ,although there were times I slipped off the tracks a bit , somehow I always seemed to have found my way back home by God’s Grace . – I want my potential fans to know that I strive to be as authentic as possible and that I make music to uplift and inspire !
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Jaicko – I’d say one of the most rewarding aspects as a creative is being able to have such a positive impact on so many lives through music . Especially to hear the stories of those who have shared personally concerning how they’ve been blessed by it . That helps me to know that God is pleased.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Like, share and tell others about the creatives that they really love, are motivated and inspired by. Support them by streaming and even purchasing their product. And lastly, even sending notes or messages of inspiration and encouragement to artists goes a long way.
