Jai, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I was laid off on my job due to Covid-19. I was applying for job after job until a idea hit me. Why work for someone else when I can work for myself. I sat down and thought what am I good at and what will bring in lots of money. Well I ran into my mother’s kitchen and grab all of her cleaning supplies, made a Facebook status and people began to share my posts and around 5 pm that evening I had my very first client and now she’s one of my primary clients and we’ve even began to build a friendship!
Jai, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Jai, a 32 year old woman striving for greatness and to be an individual to give opportunities and positive vibes. Starting my business came from rough edges of Covid-19. The economy got rough, jobs were lost and hard to find due to the pandemic. I needed to do something that I was good at and something everyone needed in those times. I made a Facebook post and a few hours later booked my first client. After that first day everyone was booking the experience. I was the cheapest and the best. It were times I wanted to quit because I wasn’t making enough but I kept pushing and upgraded my prices. I’ve dealt with hoarders, pest infestation, animal feces, flooded apartments etc. You name it I’ve done it. At first I was using store bought products then I began to create my own cleaning products and carpet solution. I was selling my products by the bottle and selling out. I’ve help a lot people in the Dallas/Ft worth metroplex. The elderly that didn’t have to funds to pay the price I always discounted them, the hoarders we always come up with a game plan so it won’t happen again, I’ve even cleaned the fields at the trail rides so they won’t get fined. Everything I just spoke about honestly makes me proud of all my hard work in the past two years! My accomplishments are my goals, and my goals are my accomplishments!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my consistency and hustle helped build my business. I would be open for business at 9am and closing as late as 2-3 am. I took on all jobs and I called/texted clients letting them know my availability and what specials I had for the week. I was consistent with staying in touch with the community about what I could offer.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was my prices, I thought if I could be cheaper then everyone I would get all the clients but that wasn’t a good way to go about business when you first start because you won’t profit. I did a make ready on a 6 bedroom house for $200 including carpets and the job took 8 hours and in the process of cleaning they shut the water off so that made the job even longer then expected. So after that day I promised myself to get paid what I’m worth and by the hour.
