We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jahna Rae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jahna below.
Jahna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I had a full time job for many years before becoming a full-time artist. Painting full-time has always been a goal of mine but it does come with some struggle. Inconsistency in work or projects can be scary but I believe if I keep putting myself and my work out there the result will be fruitful. I’m not sure where my career will go from here but I’m looking forward to the journey.
Jahna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jahna Rae (Jahna Rae Church) and I’m a painter, illustrator and muralist in Denver, CO. I went to school for illustration and graduated in 2017. I grew up in a creative household, so it was only natural to pick up painting when I was young. I’ve made art my whole life but it wasn’t until 2020 that I was able to establish myself as a part of the art community. I’m proud of myself for never giving up on this journey and I’m so thankful for the wonderful community that has supported me.
I believe my work can tell a story thats relatable and/or allow viewers to come up with their own meaning that helps them feel connected to themselves and others.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I understood the value of networking and becoming immersed in my community when I was younger and just beginning my journey as an artist. It has not only opened up doors for me but has also help foster some really beautiful relationships. I think networking helps to be in-the-know about whats going on in the art scene so you can have the opportunity to put yourself out there for projects or events you feel passionate about and align with your mission as an artist.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
A strong artist community can provide the support artists need to support their business, stay motivated and continue crating art. There’s so many ways to support creatives. Buying their art is definitely the best way, but there’s also the simple methods of attending exhibitions, following artists on social media and promoting their work. sharing their work through word of mouth, or donating to local arts organizations.
