We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jahmilah Tyson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jahmilah below.
Jahmilah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I have always had a knack for capturing great photos. My sister would ask me to do headshots for her business and her family photos all the time. Eventually, she asked me if I had thought about starting a business. I let it sizzle in my spirit and I had this dream. I could see it happening. I had this idea of taking a skill that I was really good at and making it profitable to me. Going from idea to execution is difficult when you don’t believe in yourself. The biggest part for me was believing that I could be successful by myself. I told myself to just go for it and do it. That’s what I did. I just launched out and started. I have been failing and restarting for three years and I am currently at the restarting phase. I am constantly teaching myself new things and growing.
Jahmilah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jahmilah Tyson. I reside in Houston, TX. I began my photography journey in high school when trying to fulfill my fine arts credit to graduate, but became a life long learner of photography. I provide headshots and portrait photography. I love to make people feel great about the skin that they’re in because we can be so hard on ourselves. I am very personable and work hard to provide you with an experience that you will enjoy, return to experience, and send your friends and family to have as well. The Beautiful One Studios wants you to feel beautiful too!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that success happens over night. When we think of someone that is successful, all we see is how they hit big. We do not see the countless hours and work that they put in to get where they are. I desire to be successful, but I have to change my perspective on failure. It would be easy to give up, but if I truly want to be successful I have to continuously pick myself up. I have to learn from my failures to become better and eventually I will become successful.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I believe that I’m currently in a pivot in business, career, and life. I am experiencing a new beginning in all areas. I used to hate having to start over, but I’m thankful to God that I have an opportunity to start again. I may have fallen, but I’m able to get back up and keep going. This new beginning in all areas feels refreshing and I am ready to plow ahead and grow in all areas. I know that as long as I keep God first, I will be able to accomplish great things through Him.
