We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jahmar Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jahmar, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a risk is very important. If I never took a risk on myself, I wouldn’t be a filmmaker. I wouldn’t have gotten where I am today. Having the #1 movie on BETPlus after it released or closing my first major studio deal. It took me years to get my film Sisters off the ground after so many hiccups I had. The average person probably would have quite and moved on to another movie. But I believed and knew once I got it completed, it will impact my future and others in a positive way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Jahmar Hill, born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I started working in the movie industry in 2012, where I started off as an actor. I never knew this was going to be my destination but God had it in his plans the whole time. I first was invited to be in a movie and from there my passion increased and I craved for more. Growing up, not having people believe in you or pushing you, affects your thoughts, but the fact that I had people from all over the world liking the things I’m doing, it help my confidence. It gave me that high I needed to keep going. In the beginning, I never knew how to write a movie but I was guided and became a great script writer. My company Jahmar Hill Productions is becoming a house hold name in the movie industry, winning several awards and producing several movies and tv shows.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
I sold my first script to a network. It was a great feeling. I learned so much from that opportunity, from learning the terminology in the contracts. How to negotiate better so I’m getting my monies worth. Working with a network also helps build my brand.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Communication. Everything you do in business or life is how you communicate with others.
