We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jahiel Spence a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jahiel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Looking back, I never had a definitive plan on what I wanted to do. I used to work random jobs without a clear vision. I started working out in university and saw great results pretty quickly which had people intrigued. When Covid happened, I decided to finally get my personal training certification since people always asked if I can train them. I realized soon after that fitness was something I was very passionate about and things started to click. I’ve always been fascinated with human anatomy and though introverted, I enjoyed helping people make transformations and become more confident in their own skin. I initially started training family or friends in my backyard until I was offered a job at the gym. I thought it would be good experience while building up my clientele on the side. I was mainly working as a plumber and my goal was to get enough clients that I could work as a personal trainer full time. I got to a point where my boss in plumbing needed more hours from me but since I was also training on the side, my time was already stretched. I made the decision to leave plumbing and pursue training since that was something I was actually passionate about. Looking back, I’m happy I made that decision because I’ve come so far since then but that wouldn’t have happened without my belief in following my heart.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started working out at 18 because I didn’t like how I looked. Through that process I built good habits, gained more self confidence than ever, connected with so many like minded people and found a way to help people through something I was passionate about. I decided to become a personal trainer at 24 to help people achieve the same thing. Through training I realized it wasn’t just about working out but also the mindset behind every intention. That mindset is what a lot of people overlook and it’s something I try to emphasize because it’s the starting place. Everyone has their reasons for wanting to make a change but having a strong “why” behind your intentions and building a healthy resilient mindset is key to success. In my business I offer personal training both in person and online and have gotten into mentorship, helping trainers who want to get into the online space learn the skills necessary to create a successful online training business. I differ from other coaches because apart from just teaching you the skills necessary, I focus on breaking the limiting beliefs we have that are stopping us from hitting our goals. My purpose right now is to become the best version of myself in all aspects from financially, physically, mentally, spiritually, and relationally. In doing that, I can help the people I serve accomplish the same while creating a community of like minded individuals you can rely on and grow with. That is mainly what my brand (Jaesthetix) embodies. My slogan has been “Better Each Day” from day one of going on this journey. Looking back, I have accomplished that for my clients as well as myself so far and couldn’t be more grateful! Apart from the training and mentorship, there are big offers I’m working on that will help even more people in the future which I’m looking forward to.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is overcoming self doubt. I found that anything you can do for someone else, you can do for yourself. With jobs that I’ve had, I’ve always felt like I was getting the short end of the stick but because of the security and lack of knowledge, I felt like I had to stay in the job. It wasn’t until I started my own business that I realized everything I was doing for the company, I can put that into my own which would be more rewarding.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There were 2 big pivots I’ve made in my career within the past 5 years. First I briefly mentioned which was working as a plumber and pivoting into being a personal trainer. It was a big decision for me because growing up I’ve always been thought to get a secure job that pays well and that’s exactly what plumbing was. The pay was good, it was a practical skill I could use anywhere around the world and would always be in demand. The only issue was that I hated doing plumbing work, whereas I loved personal training and working with people. Ultimately I chose to follow my passion over the more secure option. The second major pivot I had in my career is what lead me to where I am now. While working for the gym as a personal trainer, I knew I would always be limited in how much I can earn because there’s only a certain amount of hours in a day as well as the gym only paying its trainers 30% of the clients contract. I knew I needed to make a change if I wanted to grow so I hired a mentor to teach me how to navigate the online space as a person trainer. That was one of the biggest decisions I made because the cost of hiring a mentor was more than I could afford. Regardless I decided to look long term and take a chance. From implementing what I learned from my mentor, I made more in 2 weeks online than I did with the gym and it also gave me back a lot more of my time which I desperately wanted. It was at that moment that I made the decision to leave the gym and start my own training business. That pivot gave me back more of my time, allowed me to grow in the fitness industry, and ultimately make more breaking my limiting beliefs about money.
