We were lucky to catch up with Jah Mulley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have a project called IM AINT DEAD This project is meaningful to me because it was at a time when I first started getting noticed by actual people in the industry Gucci mane /kodak black /boomman/ zaytoven/Sean Paine /mixed by Gabriel / kash doll/and Boosie just to name a few . I started going hard recording day in and day out with a very minimal budget but people were reaching out and helping.I was recording non stop wanting to put out 3 projects at 1 time. One day I got tagged for the next artist to be sniper gang Kodak reached out to me and a bunch of people that I use to work with became jealous. Few weeks later I was shot I died twice in the hospital and was in a coma for about 2weeks . I woke up in handcuffs and went straight to jail. While incarcerated I refused to feel defeated I reached out to Sean Paine he kept mixing the music for me and I was like I gotta let the people know that I’m ain’t dead . I took songs that were meant for different projects and built a track list and it was like it was meant to be the way they flowed . I got another inmate to draw the picture up and was like I’m doing this I’m not giving up on my dream .I ain’t goin fa nunn
Jah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Music has always spoke to me in a different way from the average person.when I hear people I hear there pain or there passion or joy. I used music as a tool to express that my self I learned to draw on my surroundings my feelings and experiences and others around me and put it together in a way for those who can relate to coming from poverty /broken house holds /the mental stresses of the hood.I like talking to peoples souls and connecting with them on a deeper level letting them know like hey I’m you maybe not in every way but I’m you.I’m the you that has nothing /I’m the you that has a reason to be happy /I’m you that feels the hatred of a dark world /but I’m also you that loves deeply and passionately.I pursued a career in music because it’s what I love to do and even though it takes hard work it could change your life for ever so I let my pain drive my motivation loss after loss and never gave up. I currently have 2 mixtapes death or fame / I’m aint dead and few singles out plenty of more projects in the works and some merch coming soon
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Well people forget being an artist you have to draw from things outside of you and put it in your words . You also have to have a marketing mindset when thinking on making your music so sometimes things are said or misunderstood and people begin to put 2+2 together and come up with 7 you have to remember that since it’s the artist music they may say i or me but they didn’t have anything to do with what there speaking on in particular to them it’s just art and business
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
On 2 different occasions I was locked up facing 2 life sentences one time I had just met da baby and had a show with him like 2 weeks before he got into his incident at Walmart u know at that time I was like yeah I’m becoming a artist I had finally met a national celebrity and hung with them for a short second threw my career then boom i find my self in jail losing everything I worked so hard for and having to start all over trying to build a buz and finish my project before I went to jail I had started working on my project death or fame I had that name because I had just gotten shot the first time and was like I’m either gonna die or I’m gonna blow but I’m not giving up
