We recently connected with Jah Harrison and have shared our conversation below.
Jah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I created Thrift Culture HTX, a community organization that hosts Sustainable Fashion events. Creating Thrift Culture Htx has been the one of the most meaningful projects Ive worked on. I had previously been hosting events for the community while pursuing a full-time career as a Fashion Designer. For some time I had been longing for a space that I could really make and impact in my community and in Fashion. So creating Thrift Culture HTX really served as a bridge between the two. Our clothing swap events and meet-ups are goal oriented and designed to educate, support, retool closets as we reduce, reuse and recycle. Collaboration is important to our vision.
Jah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ive always shared a deep love for fashion. I started designing at age 17 and took up Fashion Merchandising in college. It wasn’t until around age 22 that I started becoming more consistent with thrifting and buying used clothing. I finally decided to open a online resale shop and since then Ive taken the time on my journey to grow and find what works for me. I am now a Eclectic Street-wear Designer and I say that confidently. I use recycled fabrics and create my own designs. I create unique items and most of the time each item is 1 of 1. My mission doesn’t stop at designing though, Thrift Culture HTX is a way I connect with the community and further educate about the fun and importance of reusing.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew early on how important collaboration is. Yes, as entrepreneurs we want to get everything done on our own, maybe because of the need to always feel in control or just being protective over our art, but building relationships with other creatives and our community is necessary. I’m not saying collaborate with anyone who presents and opportunity but I am saying consider things that align with where you are in your journey. Thrift Culture Htx was designed to build and commune with others.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to make a positive impact in my community. I strive to bring my community together and build relationships.
