Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jah Frida. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jah , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The project I’m working on currently is the most meaningful to me. During the beginning of 2020 to now I hadn’t put music out, due to a lot of things that were out of my control. The house I was staying in at that time had been hit by a tornado in Nashville, March 2020, leaving me and my roommates to re-evaluate our living situation. And only about a week and a half after that COVID hit and we were forced to quarantine. I ended up moving into a new house later that year, and unfortunately lost a few people very dear to me not long after that. With all of these dramatic changes and losses it left me confused and unable to express anything at all, due to the fact I was coping. Throughout this time I had begun working on what is now my upcoming project. It took a lot out of me to write these songs as I was not only grieving but having to dive deep into myself to really detangle and comb out how I was genuinely feeling. This project really is something special and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it! I really put my heart and soul into this one.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in San Jose, California, but grew up in Dallas, Texas my most my life. I’ve practically done music as long as I can remember, from piano in elementary school, to middle school band, to production and writing throughout high school. During high school I was a varsity wrestler and was dedicating a lot of time to that, until I literally broke my arm in half during practice. I decided it wasn’t worth losing my ability to use both hands so I double downed on music. It really has been an integral part of my life ever since then. After my first semester of college at UNT I pretty much knew school wasn’t for me. I moved out to Nashville at the age of 20 to join my brothers band, since at the time I had dropped out of college and was trying to pursue music at a professional level. We played over 100 shows over the course of about a year all around Nashville and two mini tours outside of that. Being the youngest in the group, I was able to grow in all directions from performing, to writing, the whole nine. It was definitely a very important period of my life for growth. Throughout all this time I made friends and connections, and ended up producing, engineering, cowriting, backing other bands for whoever pretty much needed me. I’ve always had an unquenchable thirst for music and wanted whatever I could get my hands on. Being an artist myself, I was able to understand what clients wanted, and also when to put my ego aside and serve the song. It’s been a wild ride and I feel I’m just getting started!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Artists are essential to society. Without art life would be mundane. We need to protect artists and ensure that people of all classes and backgrounds have the opportunity to express and create. Everyone has a story and everyone has the power to bring connection through their art. So whether it means providing resources to underprivileged kids in school through fundraising or budget reallocation, or even having facilities where people can have a safe space to create. The world would be a lot better place if everyone had the chance tap into their inner artist, whether it be cooking, clothing, painting, etc. After all, art imitates life.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think NFT’s are the future. We’re at the point where everyone has heard the buzzword, but people still don’t understand what that means. I believe NFT’s put the power in the hands of the creator. In a day and age where industry has its hands in all parts of the artists revenue, it gives the opportunity to cut all of that out and be direct with fans and consumers. I’m excited to see where it all will go!
