We were lucky to catch up with Jaelen Lopez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaelen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
when I was 15, I came out with my first song. God it was terrible! But to everyone else it was the best song ever. I’ve been singing since I could talk, it just always was something I loved and eventually the older I got, the more that it became who I was. What I was known for, what I was good at. I decided from my sophomore year In high school that I wanted to pursue music. The amount of love and good feedback I’ve received since then has always pushed me to keep going. I genuinely write my songs about my life experiences, and to me it’s my own private therapy. I get to relive the feelings I put into my song every time I perform. I can’t see myself doing anything else.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m 20 years old and I’m from El Paso, TX. I’m a junior in college and I’m pursuing a music career outside of a psychology degree and music performance minor. I juggle two jobs, full time school, an organization, and my music biz on the side. I’m an R&B artist located in San Marcos, TX where I reside for school. I believe my music makes you feel something— cause that’s what it was made to do! I feel like my sound is unique and definitely meant to make you cry! My music definitely sets a more chill vibe, and the lyrics flow out of me like open heart surgery sometimes, so it could get a bit deep. I’m most proud of how I’ve evolved and continue to evolve as an artist and grow. I hope to be able to be able to do this the rest of my life.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My father passed away when I was about 9, so a lot of my music is written with him in thought. I’ve struggled with mental health issues my whole life, and I believe the power of the mind can really determine your path. The struggles I’ve endured in my life has caused my growth at almost 21 years to be significantly impactful. As I get older, I continue to heal and grow into my highest self.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I strive to achieve this music dream of mine because I wanted to be able to look back on my life, and all the pain, and know that it was worth it. All the days and nights I didn’t give up, was worth it all because I finally got mine. I believe this music thing was meant for me, God wouldn’t have given me this gift if it wasn’t.
