We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jae Vonne Teague a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jae Vonne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
I decided to launch a magazine as the first introduction to my Faith-based media company back in 2020 when all of the pandemic and socio-economic challenges was at it’s peak. I wanted to be a bridge of hope to women who were struggling during that time. Due to the pandemic, most local vendors that I needed to properly launch my magazine and get help with content, was either unavailable, had limited work hours, or was completely out of business. This included local print shops, other local magazine companies, previous mentors, etc.
I was very discouraged and thought that I should put all of my plans on hold until the pandemic subsided, but I knew the hope I was planning on bringing to the table would be hugely beneficial to my audience. Despite major set-backs and time delays, I was able to launch the magazine successfully in 2021. With the success of the first issue, I have most recently left my 9+ year career in media in order to fully launch the magazine full-time. I am grateful for all of the challenges that I faced in 2020 and 2021, because it has brought me to appreciate the growth even more as I reflect on this journey of launching my own magazine!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always wanted to be the next “Oprah”, of my generation ever sense I could hold a microphone, as she is the only person who has successfully accomplished many of the aspirations I’ve always wanted to do. (talk show host, producer, TV networks, writer, etc.)
With this in mind, my first official media gig in College was in Radio. I stayed for about a year before graduating and landing my first job out of college at a local news station in Phoenix AZ. I left that news station to work for another one for just over 7 years. During that time I fell in more love for media, and was afforded an opportunity to be on air doing short lifestyle tips. Though my experience was everything I always imagined, I quickly learned that my love for the business would be most fulfilling if I were to pursue my very own faith-based media company that would give me full control over the content I put out. My goal was, and still is, to impact women on a global scale by offering faith-based content geared towards spiritual and mental growth.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! When I was a child I watched my mom struggle to make ends meet and do everything she could to provide for me and my siblings. Her resilience and drive, despite her own personal set-backs, makes my business goals dual-purposed. One goal is to provide a media outlet for women of faith, and the second is to give back to women who don’t have a voice. More specifically, women affected by the Sex Trafficking Industry. This particular group of women not only are largely under-valued, but the lack of services offered to this group is less than sufficient. For this reason we vow to give our magazine free of charge to the organizations that help the victims of sex trafficking. This is one of the huge goals behind our business endeavors.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I worked full time in Media for other companies, though I ran my own department, I didn’t anticipate all of the “miscellaneous” responsibilities I would have as a full time business owner. This includes everything from business taxes, to purchasing my own office supplies. I have learned, and am learning, the benefits of entrepreneurship, but the surprises along the way keep me grounded!
