We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jadeley Louis-Jean. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jadeley below.
Jadeley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Coming from the flip side of this question, i currently do have a regular job- well two. For me, regular jobs have always felt like a placeholder for me. A stepping stone until i reach that top of the mountain that i’m climbing towards. I am happier as an artist. Doing the work i want to do gives me a sort of fufillment that i can’t achieve working a regular job.
To be honest, being an artist is a whole job and often times more laborious and time consuming than a regular one. i believe it comes down to passion. There is a passion you get doing something that you love that you can’t find doing a job that your heart isn’t into. i think about this everyday…
i currently work at a shelter, taking care of cat & dogs. don’t getting me wrong, it is an absolute joy to be surrounded by beautiful creatures all day but my heart is no longer in it. It’s mundane, it doesn’t challenge me and i find i spent most of my time there thinking about projects i want to do, things i want to create and that’s all i want to do at the end of the day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a child i have always had a profound interest in cartoons- they were my escape and as i grew older, it was the one art form that i always went back to. in fact i loved it so much that i channeled it in the creation of my own cartoon character (Verona) and clothing brand.
with verona’s comics i wanted to create a character that spoke to the inner child in most modern adults. i tackle problems of insecurities, dating and often just the random absurdity that we love about cartoons. It’s fun. It’s quirky and i hope to one day have it on the screens for the masses to enjoy.
My clothing brand (DĮRTY LĀWNDRY) came about during a time in my life when i was in love with graphic tshirts and wanted to see more shirts that expressive-different. It was a time where i felt the market was saturated with a lot of the same things.
All my work comes from the heart, it is an outword exrpression of things i’ve enjoyed and i find that when you do things that you truly enjoy, it inspires others to do what they enjoy doing. That’s how i came up with my slogan for my brand; “express yourself”.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal ultimately is seeing my brand go global. I think that’s what is driving everything. I have a lot of confidence in the fact that everything i am doing has a purpose otherwise i would not come back to it everytime i quit. I see the vision in my head and it is clear. it makes sense so why shouldn’t i pursue it if the vision won’t go away? lol
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
the most rewarding aspect is havning people connect with my work. it’s something beautiful to experience when someone is teling you how a piece moves them. i will never forget a festival i did a couple of years ago- i was standing underneath my tent with all my paintings (some were facing the street so people can see them as they pass by) and i this little girl passed by then stopped. she stared at a painting for a few seconds- i don’t even know which one and then she smiled softly then walked away. it was such a small and insignificant moment but it literally meant the world to me.
