Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jade Patteri. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jade, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
A meaningful project of mine that I’ve worked on recently has been my latest song and music video “Throne.” “Throne” is the start of my new take on the rock opera genre but adding in pop to the mix! I look forward to expanding this genre even more with adding classical music into pop rock! This has been a long time coming for my team and I and not only has it been exciting to tap back into my classical roots again but this is also the first music video I’ve directed fully by myself. It was such a great learning experience and I’m thoroughly excited to expand in this aspect of my career as a director. As well as diving into a genre I feel fits me the best!
Jade, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been singing, dancing and acting since I was 5! I grew up in an extremely musical family so there was no chance of me NOT becoming a performer. From a young age I was in classes learning all genres of dancing, singing and acting. My first huge professional job was playing “Young Jane” in the World Premiere of “Jane Eyre.” From there I caught the bug and have been living to perform and create ever since. I started writing music not long after and slowly but surely began releasing music independently. Now I release primarily pop rock music and have just added classical pieces and opera to the mix. I hope to fit a gap I feel is missing in the music industry and will be releasing a new song called “Cupid’s Vicious” very soon that showcases more of what this new genre of music entails! With my music I love to add as many aspects of storytelling and dance as I can, especially in my music videos. Story telling is a huge part of my music and you can be sure to expect quite the video to be just as thought out as the lyrics behind the song.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a point in my music career where I realized I was not exactly standing out in my field. I had to make a tough decision after JUST releasing a whole acoustic pop EP, and completely change my sound and brand. Not only did I feel like I was blending in but there was a huge side to my storytelling I felt I was scared to really tap into. I finally switched over to pop rock and immediately fell in love with the intensity and finally felt like I was being authentic and raw with my lyrics. It was a tough decision since I spent years establishing a brand that after a while I started to realize wasn’t exactly me. Changing directions was extremely difficult being that I spent most of my life making music in a consistent way. However since then I feel like I’ve become not only a better musician but an incredibly more diverse story teller and have tapped into a side of myself with business that I never knew existed.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that not everyones opinion on your art should be accounted for and implemented. Especially when it comes to art! Art is subjective and if I listened to every single persons opinion I’d never be able to finish a song. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but understanding that you enjoying your project is the most important, is crucial. Follow your gut while also having those people in your life who know you and your art. People that can be a helpful source of criticism when needed. Who you listen to is extremely important and as a people pleaser I had to learn that I’m not always going to make everyone happy. Make yourself happy and also be able to take construction. Balance is key!
