We recently connected with Jade Oglesby and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jade thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I was driving to work on a sunny Wednesday morning.
While on Mopac, I began to notice my heart rate increasing and my hands began to tingle. I rolled down the windows for fresh air and began to think ‘what do I know about heart issues….’ I was scrolling the files of my mind to try and identify what was happening to me. The pinch in my chest grew tighter and I was scared. I pulled into the parking lot and managed to park my car amidst deep breathing and holding my chest. I called my boyfriend to let him know I was having a heart attack -maybe? After speaking with him for a few minutes we got around to that I was likely having an anxiety attack. I was having a deep, unconscious and visceral reaction to going into work. Maybe it was the stress of barely living paycheck to paycheck or the systemic disorganization at my job;
I had to get out.
I always knew I wanted to work for myself and own my own Esthetics practice, but the when and the how swirled in the unknown. I was doing what so many professionals in my industry do- working for a business, gaining experience and knowledge in my field, then being hit with the biggest epiphany of all: you cannot build your own practice while working for someone else. It will stay a ‘side hustle’ and it will stay small. Eventually, if you want to launch it, you have to leap.
It was in the discomfort and the stress that I ‘bucked up’ as we say in Texas and started the process of planning to fully launch my own esthetics practice.
As a creature of a habit, the discomfort had to become just so, in order for me to let it go, I had to swim out where I could not see the shore line. I began repurposing my stress and anxiety into fuel. Fuel to build what I know I can; what I know I deserve.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jade Oglesby and I have lived in Austin for 25 years. I worked in the service industry for 20 of those years which has allowed me to connect with people and establish trust through kindness and being authentic.
I have also taught dance classes and made herbal body care products, herbal remedies and tinctures.
Going into esthetics is an amalgamation of many of my skills combined. I’m a nurturer, so I finally found how I’m going to nurture others.
I am a results-driven esthetician that focuses on all types of acne, hyperpigmentation and aging. I absolutely love helping my clients find peace and confidence through their enhanced skin health.
I offer custom facials, chemical peels, diamond microdermabrasion and more!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Sharing my authentic and candid self has been my best move as far as growing my clientele. I’m mostly active on instagram as far as marketing and sharing updates and fun facts about Salt & Sea Esthetics. Because my industry is heavily referral-based, my work and my sessions have to speak for themself. I want someone to be so happy with how their skin is improving while working with me; that they are dying to tell others!
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
In the beauty industry, it can feel like we have to stay chic and elevated. While I can be both of those things, I’m also goofy and funny and I love making people laugh.
When I was discussing my marketing campaign with my media director, he pitched a really cute idea. Just be me!
We even left bloopers at the end of some of my videos and that was everyone’s favorite part.
