Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jade Dixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jade, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
You ever hear the saying, “When it feels scary to jump in, that is when you should jump?”
When working full-time, I would sit at my desk, look around the office and realize there was not one person’s life I wanted. Everyone was comfortable with their secured jobs. As for me, there was more I could do outside of my 9-5.
This led me to read stories about women like Sophia Amoroso, Imani Ellis, Issa Rae, etc., about their journeys into entrepreneurship. I fell in love with their perseverance and how they created opportunities for themselves without depending on a job.
Those were the women I embodied to become.
The first step was building my brand.
In 2020, I leaned on my mentor, Brittney Carter, to learn how she balanced building a personal brand and running a successful marketing agency (B.Carter Solutions). I was tied between building a brand and launching a business, and I said to myself, “Why not do both?”. I didn’t have a specific reason to start my business, but I chose to take the risk anyway because I had this gut feeling that it was something I needed to do to explore my full potential.
I was determined to face more challenges and learn everything I needed to know to become the women I aspired to be. I took on multiple projects and responsibilities to share my expertise with other organizations outside of my 9-5. Over time, I slowly burned out because I was focused on the destination instead of the process.
Eventually, the burnout caught up to me, costing me my 9-5 job.
All I had left was my brand and business.
In 2021, I became a full-time business owner, accepted clients for a year, rebranded Instagram, invested in coaches, and joined memberships. I felt I was moving more than I was progressing. I realized I heard the same things I knew I needed to do. I didn’t give myself enough time to see results.
I slowly became frustrated because nothing was going as planned. I gave up, started over again, and gave up again.
3 years later, I’m still navigating the ups and downs of my journey. It never stops.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sure! My name is Jade. I am a social media strategist and consultant, recovering perfectionist, and prosecco lover. I enjoy helping women build their social media strategies to effectively communicate their brand and build a trusting community of supporters gracefully.
I started my career in marketing five years ago as a digital marketing specialist in the association industry, where I gained experience in email marketing, social media strategy, event marketing, and website copy. After a few years, I decided to pursue opportunities specifically in social media marketing and explored other industries, such as real estate, non-profit organizations, start-ups, and small businesses. I decided to pursue opportunities specifically in social media marketing.
Currently, I’m working as a social media consultant/contractor with a marketing agency to provide expertise in content strategy.
Outside of my marketing career and being a consultant, I love reading books, traveling, experiencing new restaurants, and spending time with my family and friends.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Three years ago, I started branding myself with no clear direction. I knew what went into building a brand once I consistently promoted myself and learned what I enjoyed doing with clients.
I went through a major setback with my brand on Instagram because I didn’t know how I wanted to use Instagram for myself or my business anymore.
I had difficulty believing in myself and was overwhelmed trying to figure out everything from branding to running a business independently.
I took a three-month hiatus from Instagram and decided to rebrand myself entirely.
During that time, I went through many ups and downs in my business since I was absent on Instagram.
But, it was a risk I was willing to take because I didn’t want to continue promoting a brand with no clarity.
I invested in a brand agency and an Instagram coach to help me visually and verbally make sense of my brand and how it aligns with my services.
Now, I want to help other women tackle the same issue.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Initially, I still needed to decide on an ideal client, so I worked with a range of clients to get my feet wet and learn who benefited the most from my expertise. I mainly worked closely with a range of small business owners who struggled with staying consistent and needed to delegate their social media so they could run the business. I helped them put things into perspective from a strategic approach to building brand awareness.
I grew frustrated because I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. Everything needed to be aligned. I decided to re-evaluate the purpose of my brand, clarify my target audience and identify the services I enjoy providing for my clients.
