We recently connected with Jade Dixon and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jade, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were starting over, I would definitely lay out a more efficient & strategized game plan for my business. I kind of just jumped into the nail business and hoped for the best. I’d also try to gain more knowledge from someone in my field that’s been in it longer than I have. Having a mentor could have saved me a ton of time & money as well as mentally prepared me for what to expect when it comes to becoming a nail technician & running your own business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Jade Dixon . I’m 22 years old, from Jackson, Louisiana, & I’ve been doing nails since I was about 7 years old. I’ve always loved doing nails & other creative activities from a young age, so professionally doing nails just came naturally to me as I got older. I’ve been professionally doing nails for almost 3 years & I currently offer manicures, acrylic overlays & acrylic extensions. What sets me apart from other nail technicians is that I offer house-calls; I personally travel to my client’s residence & provide said services there instead of in a shop. Very convenient for those who work late, don’t have access to transportation, can’t find a babysitter for their kids, etc. I’d have to say that I’m most proud of my personal perseverance & the overall growth & stability of my business. Continuously practicing & researching my craft to provide the best quality work, the effort that has gone into content creating, learning to adapt to everyday challenges & slowly building my list of lovely & loyal clientele, including others that support me. None of it has been easy but, the love of my supporters has kept me going for sure. For any potential followers, clients, etc. I’d like to say thank you in advance. I put a lot of myself into my work, so the support means more than you could ever know! If you’re working on perfecting your own craft(s) or trying something new, don’t give up & keep going!! If I gave up every time I messed up, plans got delayed, or I felt uncomfortable because it was “outside of my comfort zone”, I would have never gotten to see the many seeds I’ve planted over the years grow into this beautiful abundance of knowledge, opportunities, love & support. So word of advice, do it scared! You never know your full potential until you try!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by consistently posting content & following/supporting other nail technicians. I’m a perfectionist, so if I didn’t like a specific video/photo, I wouldn’t want to post it until it was “perfect” but, I’ve learned that just because I may not think its worth posting doesn’t mean that my audience thinks the same thing. Some of my videos that I thought could use a little more editing have gotten the most views! So my advice for those just starting to build their social media presence would be to Post. Your. Content! Somebody is going to see that video/photo/etc. & love it, so post without doubting yourself. You never know who you could inspire along your journey! Also, don’t be scared to reach out to others who are also in your field. You’d be surprised at how many new friends you could make along the way!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been providing quality services that last with reasonable prices & great customer service. I wouldn’t want to pay for something that isn’t going to look good or last long, therefore, I only use high quality products and make sure every client is happy with whatever service they receive before they leave. Plus, I love what I do, yes it brings me income, but at the end of the day I actually care for everyone that sits in my chair. I think that makes all the difference in building your clientele.
