We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jade Dior. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jade Dior below.
Jade Dior, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
The thing I would change in our education systems would be to put more focus on developing intellectual property and monetizing skills students already possess. I feel that this would better prepare students for the real world. It also puts emphasis on using your brain rather than physical labor for work, broadening your options for multiple streams of income. There should also be more focus on hands on learning rather than just studying books. There is only so much you can learn and understand from books and lectures. I believe the valuable experience is developed through hands on involvement in your career field. No class could have taught me the valuable lesson I learned through actually building my business.
Jade Dior, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jade Dior, owner of Jade Dior Beauty, a luxury hair supplier and boutique. I got started in the beauty industry as a teenager, booking my first paid client at 14 years old. I always knew I wanted to own a business in the beauty industry and have recently expanded my business to providing swimwear and apparel items. I have also recently started a YouTube channel where I showcase everything from beauty tutorials to entrepreneurial advice and my life experiences. I am most proud of my entrepreneurial journey as a whole, my confidence to start as well as my persistence through all obstacles.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I opened my physical store location June 15 2018, after only being open for a year and a half the Coronavirus pandemic hit and through state requirements I had to halt business operations. This was honestly a scary time for me as a new business owner considering no one could have foreseen those circumstances. I resorted to focusing on sales rather than services which is what helped maintain my business. I was so glad that I added products to my business because without that aspect I may have had to close for good like a lot of others during that time.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A hard lesson for me to unlearn was expecting my close friends and family to support my business the way I supported my business. It’s a common feeling to have because those are the people who you’d thing would support you the most. Not everyone sees and understands your vision the way you do and that’s okay! Majority of my support comes from complete strangers and I’ve learned to be okay with that.
