We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jadah Manon . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jadah below.
Jadah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I started Jadah Glam during COVID because I finally had the time and opportunity to start my own company. I knew that long term I wanted to have a business in all sectors of the beauty market because I wanted to be an entrepreneur and had a passion for the beauty realm. I had always wanted these businesses to be bright and fun so that they could embody who I am. During the pandemic after I had finished school I had a lot of free time on my hands so my father proposed that I start my makeup business. At the time I wanted to create my own products so we thought that lip glosses were the way to start. Since I had just graduated from high school I didn’t really know anything about starting my own business so my father decided to hire me a marketing manager who would help me run my business as well as teach me how to Market.
After about a month of working on my business, I started college at NYU. Since I wanted to create my own products my father bought me all of the ingredients and I attempted to formulate the lip glosses. At this point, I realized that I wasn’t a cosmetic chemist and that making lip gloss wasn’t as easy as it seemed. The oils weren’t mixing with the base, I couldn’t get the lip gloss into the tubes, I didn’t know how to use the preservative, and everything was a mess. As I look back on it, it’s hilarious to me because I thought I would be in the kitchen making these lip glosses by myself. When it comes to running a business, you need people who are knowledgeable. You can learn some things along the way, but others, such as product production, should be handled by people who are experts. That’s why I decided that I was going to outsource product development.
After I knew where I was going to get the products from a manufacturer my marketing team and I started the branding. Since I wanted it to showcase who I am we decided on bright pink, blue, purple, and yellow for our colors. We worked together to really bring that vision to life, which took about 5 months.
Finally, after 7 months I launched Jadah Glam and it has only gone up from there! Now I’m introducing new products and trying to increase my brand awareness!
Jadah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jadah Manon and I stepped into the beauty realm when I was 14 years old. I had just started high school and wanted to be THAT GIRL! Sadly, that didn’t happen. I couldn’t do makeup for my life, and my hair was fried! For about 2 years I tried to do my makeup, but it wasn’t working. All of the products I was using were just not cutting it. Pigments weren’t showing, powders weren’t blending, and it was a mess. So I moved to haircare. At 15 I decided I wanted to go natural and help others who wanted to do the same. I started my Youtube channel to document my curly hair journey and review products. After a few months, I tried makeup again and still couldn’t figure it out! At 17 I applied to colleges and decided I wanted to go for Entrepreneurship and Marketing. I loved the business class that I took and wanted to have my own businesses in the Beauty realm. During the pandemic I thought, maybe I should start my own makeup brand that’s pigmented, young, and fun! The other brands weren’t exactly working for me at the moment so I decided to become the brand. I started with lip products and am now maneuvering into face products! Today I am 20 years old, graduating a year early from NYU Stern School of Business! As I am a digital creator as well as an entrepreneur, in the long run I want Jadah Glam to become the blueprint for the next generation of creators!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn was doing everything by myself. When I first started my business I thought that if I didn’t do everything by myself then it wouldn’t be my business. I tried doing the website, the product development, the photography, and anything you can think of I thought I could do. It wasn’t until recently when I was on the phone with my marketing manager and we were discussing email marketing that I realized I don’t have to do everything. There are people who specialize in these things that are more guaranteed to help my business than I am. My job is to run a business, I don’t have to do every little thing.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I first started with an Instagram page because at the time Tik Tok wasn’t as big. I posted other’s makeup looks and videos of myself using the products before they had launched. I did this to build an audience that would be ready to purchase once my products went live. Growing this page was a little more complicated than I thought because at the time it was just a lookbook. It wasn’t until two months ago when one of the reels I had posted went viral that my page finally started to gain traction.
TikTok was quite the opposite. I had only posted about 5 videos before one blew up and I gained 23k followers. The downside to this was that my video went viral to the wrong audience. Somehow children saw my video and they all followed me, but as I continued to post they started to unfollow me. Now as I gain followers who actually care about my brand and products I’m also losing all of the followers who followed me from the video that went viral. So, I’ve been stuck at 23k followers for a while now, but I’m okay with that because people who actually care about my brand are starting to follow me!
