We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jada Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jada , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
When I first started Mixd Fashion, it wasn’t my initial dream, I actually had more interest in film and being a costumer designer.
In high school, I was already designing, making costumes for the drama club, interning on film sets, and just loving the process telling a story with clothing. I knew I wanted to take my passion for clothing and design and turn it into a career.
College was the next step,I was taught haute couture methods from Pairs. The fashion design program was intense, I had weekly fittings for different designs. My designs didn’t conform to what I was being taught, and my professors challenged the wearability of them. But I stayed true to my vision and I felt that one day people would be wearing my clothing.
The real turning point was when I worked in the film industry after college. Being a part of something as massive as Netflix or Warner Brothers productions taught me discipline and the art of working under pressure. I’d be sewing leather coats one minute and building custom pieces for modesty rigs the next. It sharpened my sewing and design skills.
In 2019, I decided to stop thinking and just *start.* I created Mixd Fashion and launched online with just a handful of items. We fully launched by creating and posting a “Mixd video” This took months of planning, but I wanted to let everyone in Cleveland see and want to wear my designs, I did everything: designing, sewing, packaging orders, and promoting on social media.
We started traveling to other states doing fashion shows and photoshoots, growing our audience. Pop-ups became a huge part of my process,I started building a real customer base. I then started having interns from Kent State, and they learned design and how to run a small business.
I aways take an idea and break it down into smaller steps, to make it achievable and not so overwhelming. Every day is still a lesson in running a brand, but you have to fully believe in it 100%

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Throughout my life, people have tried to fit me into categories, but I’ve learned to embrace what makes me unique. My family taught me to never let others define me, and I’ve carried that lesson into every aspect of my life, from working on major film productions with Netflix, Disney, and HBO Max to creating my ultimate passion: Mixd Fashion.
Mixd is more than a brand—it’s a movement showing the world what girls are and can be. We don’t fit into boxes, and we don’t follow rules. Every piece I design is fun and colorful and celebrates the girlies.
We are a proud female and minority-owned business originally from Cleveland,Ohio and now based in Texas. You can shop with us online and at pop-up events. We also create custom looks for artists, musicians, special events, and more.
Mixd is a little bit street and country too. A classic Mixd piece stands out with our imaginative use of color and textures, all while embracing a sporty western theme. We’re known for our sequined chaps, cowboy boot tops, and track pants. Additionally, Mixd offers accessories sourced from local makers to complete our designs.
Our high-end garments are created from patterns to fittings, ensuring each final product is has the best quality. Everything is sewn in-house by the designer, with a small range of size variations available for each look. As a zero-waste brand, we repurpose all fabric scraps into scrunchies, dog beds, or pillow fillings.
Founded in 2018, Mixd is here to show the world what girls are capable of, to really go for it and have fun while doing it. Don’t let the world define you by one category—show your Mixd vibe!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what’s really helped build Mixd’s reputation is our attention to detail and the quality we put into every piece. From the first concept to the final design, no detail is overlooked. I’m always thinking about my customer—who she is, where she’s wearing the look, and even practical things like, can she wash it? It’s those little details that make all the difference in creating sustainable high quality designs.
Also I have endless inspiration for western designs, and how to make them more street or colorful and just fun. Our customers, models, and followers love the theme for our collections and they know we are doing something new.
Mixd’s goal has always been to create high-end, ready-to-wear fashion that’s actually affordable.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
We absolutely love pop-ups, it’s one of our favorite ways to connect with new customers! Compared to online, meeting people in person allows us to share the story behind our designs and explain all the little details that make Mixd unique. One of the best parts is seeing customers try on the looks. Watching their reactions and how they light up when they find something they love is the best moment, it’s a reminder of why I do what I do.
I also enjoy getting to know our customers their likes, dislikes, and what excites them about fashion. Pop-ups are a great way to gather feedback on our designs too. Hearing directly from our customers helps us improve our high quality designs!
