Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jada Roberts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jada thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The story behind how Voyage got its name is not some extravagant story where ever since I was a little girl the word voyage had some significance to me. In all honestly, during the time I decided to start a business our home at the time was getting renovated and the color that the walls were getting painted was named Voyage (wasn’t the prettiest color in my opinion) and my mother referred that name to me. After, looking up the Google definition of the word which was “a long journey involving travel by sea or in space,” I actually liked the definition and kind of personalized it to my own. The definition I came up with for my brand name is an ongoing journey of downs and ups in life that never ends yet you always make it through it all. Which is why my logos are what they are but that’s details for another question.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Let’s start from the beginning my parents themselves are entrepreneurs so ever since I was 11-12 years old I have been surrounded by entrepreneurship. I was the girl in middle school that sometimes on the weekend instead of hanging out I was helping out with my family business. I didn’t quite understand the beauty of it at the time but I definitely would say it exposed me to some things that lead me to want to start a business. Really, ever since sixth grade, I was a mini entrepreneur I would say. In sixth grade, I learned how to make cheer bows and sold them at school. In seventh grade, I made baked goods and sold those at school while also working at my dad’s business. After a few years, I had got a feeling where I told myself at the age of 16 I wanted to do something life-changing, and that life-changing thing was going to be to start a business. I didn’t have in mind yet what type of business but I just knew I wanted to start one. As my 16th birthday approached and I spoke with my parents I decided to start a clothing brand because there would always be a demand for clothes and I was thinking of longevity with whatever I decided to do. From then on I just went through the whole process of becoming a business owner and building a brand.
I provide custom one-of-one, pieces, and ready-to-wear apparel for men, women, and children. I also provide clothing alteration services. I help bring my customers’ vision alive and make it to where they don’t have to look for clothing because I know I’m not a big fan of clothes shopping so being able to make clothes is a huge plus for me also. In addition to, I feel as if Voyage provides comfort and helps cut back shopping time. (took out but)I also provide a custom customer experience when receiving a product or service from me, and I help boost their confidence by making them feel and look even better once they put their Voyage piece on.
I can say, I am most proud of just my overall business itself. I take pride in every piece I make as I do make the majority of my pieces myself, the clientele I built, my website, and just everything that comes with running a business. Only being 19 years old and having support from customers worldwide is a blessing. As well as being someone’s go-to person when they want an outfit for a special occasion is amazing and still shocks me to this day. Just to think this all used to be just a thought that has come to life is indescribable.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I’ll like to start by saying I never went into starting my business with the mindset that my business was ever a “side hustle.” As crazy as it seems whenever I got a job (which I have been through a few, just a few) while running my business that job was my side hustle, not my business. From the beginning, I have always been passionate about my business and it was just a risk I didn’t mind taking. Yet, it did take every bit of these three years I have been in business to scale it up to where it’s at today and still have way more to do. Some ways I scaled my business up to where it’s at today is simply by being consistent with working and producing while also consistently promoting. I know it’s easier said than done but when your products are good quality work your time will come. In addition, I scaled my business by bringing new designs within my city while also participating in the latest clothing trends.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I definitely would say my customer service and work itself built my reputation within the clothing business market. I’ll start off by discussing the customer service part of my answer. Who I am as a person I don’t just prioritize my products but customer satisfaction. I put myself in the customers’ shoes in any and every situation and even let it be known that they are paying customers so their voices matter. Also, I’ll like to add that my work is versatile and I try to focus on creativity. With both of those aspects put together, it helps build a good reputation for my business because my customer feel and know that they matter which cause them to spread the word about their good experiences when encountering my business.
