We caught up with the brilliant and insightful JaCynthia Bailey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JaCynthia, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Some of our biggest defining moments have to do with the emotions we feel in some of our lowest points in life. My biggest defining moment was when Covid shut the world down. I had to slow down, be with myself, my family and face all of the ugly things I kept myself too busy to see. I surrendered everything to the Lord and began to pray daily “create in me a clean heart or God” from that process I healed, landed the job of my dreams, wrote my first healing journal & launched retreats for women to get back to their original design
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a daughter of a teen mom. I grew up always wanting to please others and afraid of being rejected. I got married at the age of 19 just to have a family of my own but not understanding what marriage really was. I’ve always enjoyed being in community with others, organizing, solving problems and building people up. In every stage of my life I was always doing those simple things in many different settings but somehow each phase never lasted long….. When I found the courage to heal from trauma, lost friendships, mistakes and be who God created me to be every door that was for me opened. I don’t limit myself anymore, I can’t even say that there’s just one thing that I do. Today every gift that lays on the inside of me gets used to whatever capacity is needed in whatever project that comes across my path. I raise amazing little warriors. I am a mentor to women, married couples, and leaders. I use my organizing skills in the tech industry. I share my creative expertise in entertainment. I am an encouraging wife. I am most proud of my surrender unto my creator which has made all the difference in every area of my life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The major lesson that I had to unlearn was the belief that other peoples actions were geared toward me. Most of my life, I lived with the thought that if I could please everyone I could keep peace, be what people needed and some how save myself from rejection. But the truth is we all have struggles, we all have issues we need to personally work through and sometimes we hurt each other because we don’t have ourselves together. I now take the lesson of everyone has a backstory that creates the way they see the world and how they live in the present moment. I can still appreciate people for what they’re able to bring to my life and except what they cannot do for me. This perspective keeps you focused on what you are meant to achieve and do.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For two years, I had a dream of working with my current tech company! All I knew is that I wanted to use my skill set. I tried to get into the company as a contract worker, refers from current employees. Nothing seemed to be working. When the 2020 shut down happen, and I was forced to look inward. I worked on my attitude toward others, starting with my family, I practice serving others and found more clarity. I put my focus on going back to school and finishing early, and I stopped being busy for the sake of being busy. At the beginning of 2021 an email I had sent asking a question made me stand out and I was asked to apply for a role with my dream company! I got my foot in the door and worked my way to the job I really wanted in less than a year!
