We recently connected with Jacy and have shared our conversation below.
Jacy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My mom is the hardest working person I know. I owe it to her for being so supportive of me throughout my journey as an artist and all of my hardships. She installed determination into me. She taught me to get things done, work harder than everyone else, and don’t let anything stop you from your end goals. She also taught me to be loving and kind, and that being mean doesn’t get you very far.
Jacy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Jacy, a 23 year old pop singer/songwriter from Sacramento. Ca. I’ve always known I wanted to be (as some would call) a Popstar, since a very young age. I was the little girl singing to people at recess, or doing the school talent shows every year….telling all the kids and teachers they would hear my songs on the radio one day. At 13, that dream became possible when I stepped foot on “The Xfactor” stage. I’ve never felt so confident being in-front of the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen, industry professionals, cameras, and celebrity judges. I knew after getting a taste of what it could be like, I was all in. From then on, I’ve been actively pursuing my career. School was never easy, and I was crucified by peers for doing something different. My sophomore year of Highschool, I had enough and tested out. I was then able to go on a few tours, while others my age were going to prom and football games. K I made the big move to LA as soon as I turned 18. Performing has always been my favorite, but since I was independent, I had to learn to make my own music, market myself, and network. I fell in love with writing. Being able to poetically get my feelings across in under 3 minutes is better than any therapy, and I sure needed to dump my feelings somewhere while taking on a big city filled with obstacle to be faced every day. Long story short, I’m 23 now, still grinding… perfecting my craft, and getting closer to my goal each and every day.
You may be asking, “what is that goal?” And there isn’t a simple answer for that. People say once you achieve what you originally wanted, you always want more. But honestly right now, I could die happy if my years of determination and tears, got me a Grammy nom and a sold out tour! Until then, I’m not stopping.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being in a industry of fake, and calculated people, I had to unlearn that most don’t want to help you succeed. You HAVE to do everything yourself. Throughout the years, there’s been too many times where people blew smoke up my (you know what). I’d rather be told no and keep it moving, instead waiting around hopelessly. I’m also trying teach myself to not be so stubborn, but that is a work in progress… since sometimes it works in my advantage!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Back in 2021, I had a coming of age moment. I thought I would have achieved what I’ve been wanting so bad by now. My mom always has told me, “keep doing the same thing over and over and you won’t see any different outcome” , so I changed the trajectory of my career and became my own manager, label, camera man, and booking agent. As soon as that happened, I made huge strides.
