We recently connected with Jacquie “ooh” Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jacquie “ooh” thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
How people think of me NOW is how I want people to think of me when I’m gone. Today’s footprint is tomorrow’s legacy.
One of my favorite quotes is, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
To me a legacy cements your life’s work as something that benefits future generations, though you may never see it come to fruition. It’s a drive to create something greater than yourself— something that forever improves the lives of others. When I look at the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he fought for our civil rights with a passion. He died before he was able to see a lot his work come to fruition, however his legacy lives on and he will always be respected. A legacy isn’t just a project and it doesn’t happen overnight. However, you can create your legacy with dedication, hard work and meaningful contribution, you can make a mark that’s forever celebrated.
For me, my hope is to build a legacy to where my effectiveness is measured by the lives I touched and influenced. And how they all show up. At the end of each day I think about my legacy and I ask myself these questions…What did I do today to make a difference in someone’s life? How did I show up? And who did I help? And that when those who knew me hear my name after I am gone, they will feel a sense of warmth in their hearts and want to continue my work of serving others selflessly!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Well, I’m the amazing Jacquie “ooh” Johnson. I am the founder of Jacquie ooh, an online hub for women who are looking for resources to help them think well and live well. A space where women can go for conversation, connection, and expert advice.
My passion for helping women steemed from when I lost my middle son, Justin in 2004. I realized after Justin’s passing the importance of community and helping women who went through the same thing. I am passionate about supporting other women, empowering them, collaborating with them, which in turn creates great positive change.
Jacquie ooh is a community to help women to realize that their journey is their journey, to trust the process, too flourish where they are planted, and know that TIMING IS EVERYTHING. Over time we have built a community of women who will help you unpack your struggles and celebrate your every win! We have become a community that is welcoming and uplifting; where you can feel comfortable being your whole self; where you can feel confident you’ll be seen, heard, and valued; that loves on you in your lowest moments; and a community with purpose-driven women who share our values.
One thing we know for sure is that, almost every individual, will experience being on the mountain top and having low valley experiences at one or another point in their life. Even a typically ‘highly-engaged’ professional can be struck down by waves of despondence and disengagement from time-to-time. Jacquie ooh is here to help bring solutions to the table, not add to the problem. One of the ways we achieve this goal is through our high-impact virtual motivational talk show, Motivational Monday with Jacquie ooh. We bring together awesome women who are like-minded to learn, network, empower and collaborate. Our show also features these women, and gives us an opportunity to highlight them in our community. Our guests have women from around the world. Women from Ghana, Japan, Kuwait, Kenya, and the Philippines. And, we have covered many topics such as: parenting, marriage, imposter syndrome, finances, postpartum, teaching Black Girls to speak Spanish, mental illness among men, domestic violence, friend vs. foe, careers, the importance of self-care, the importance of timing and so much more. Motivational Monday with Jacquie ooh airs every 1st Monday of the month at 7pm CST LIVE on our Facebook page (jacquieoohblog) and YouTube channel (jacquieooh).
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I feel what has helped me build my reputation within my market is being vulnerable and transparent with my community. Showing them that all days are not great days. I’m no different than they are, I do have some bad days as well. Me and my kids don’t always get along. Me and my husband don’t always see eye to eye. I make mistakes in my business, and so many other things that happens on this journey called life, however I keep moving forward.
I show my community that I am not perfect and I do not claim to be perfect. I experience the same issues they experience and have some of the same struggles. There are days when I just need to unplug from everything and rest. And there are times when I need to reset. I feel that when you show vulnerability you gain trust from your community which helps to build your reputation.
In addition, to being vulnerable and transparent, I feel it was important for me to show my community that I am there for them by going out of my way to help; make sure everyone feels seen and their voices heard; to be consistent; to be authentic; and to be engaging.
One thing I have learned is that there is no greater value than a positive reputation. It will open doors that you never imagined you would walk through and you will sit at tables you only dreamed of!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my community is building trust. People have to trust you in order to show up for your events, purchase your products or services, etc. If you do not have their trust you will not have their attention. Our business has grown from people trusting us and sharing with others their experiences. Whether they attended an event we hosted or purchased our amazing skin care products they shared their experience with others and our business has grown tremendously. Sometimes the simplest things make the largest impact and are the most effective.
